One of the games that rewrote how third-person action works, and it still holds up well enough to demand your attention even two decades later. Just know what you're getting into with the PC port.

I've come back to Resident Evil 4 more times than I care to admit, and each run sharpens my appreciation for how deliberately every piece of it is designed. Leon Kennedy is sent into rural Spain to rescue the U.S. President's daughter from a parasitic cult called Los Illuminados, and from the first village siege onward the game never really lets you breathe. What made it revolutionary in 2005 still makes it compelling now: the over-the-shoulder camera replaced the series' fixed angles and brought players directly into the action, while the requirement to plant your feet before firing creates a constant rhythm of positioning and decision-making that feels nothing like a modern cover shooter. The mechanics layer up nicely. The Attache Case inventory system is a grid puzzle running in parallel with the combat, since you are always juggling pistols, shotguns, rifles, grenades, and treasures against a finite grid that you can expand by paying the Merchant. That shopkeeper is one of gaming's great incidental characters: he appears at checkpoint-style alcoves, sells weapon upgrades for pesetas you loot from enemies and environments, and even buys back treasures you've found. Headshots stun enemies for follow-up kicks and suplexes, knees buckle for melee closers, and QTEs punctuate big moments, including boss fights against El Gigante, Verdugo, and Krauser. The pacing holds up remarkably well, with intensity peaks broken by quieter exploration sections before the next set piece. Replayability is genuine. The main campaign runs roughly 15-20 hours on a first playthrough, and completing it unlocks The Mercenaries mode, the Separate Ways Ada Wong scenario, and bonus costumes. Professional difficulty is a serious test, and the Merchant's upgrade paths give repeat runs a different texture depending on which weapons you prioritize. Now for the honest stuff. This is the older PC port, based on the PS2 version rather than the GameCube original, which means it carries some long-documented baggage: occasional stability issues, and mouse support that historically required community fixes rather than working cleanly out of the box. If you want a plug-and-play experience, a controller is strongly recommended. The Ashley escort sections divide players too. She is helpless, she is vocal about it, and keeping her alive while managing crowds is either a satisfying tension mechanic or a persistent annoyance depending on your tolerance. The cutscene QTEs have aged the worst of anything here: they are intrusive, and failing one mid-scene still feels cheap. For players who have only experienced the 2023 remake, going back to the original is a worthwhile exercise in understanding where the design DNA comes from. The original's B-movie irreverence and snappier laser-sight gunplay feel distinct enough to justify both. If you have never played either version, this is where the series found its footing as an action game, and it remains one of the cleaner examples of how to build tension through resource scarcity and spatial control. The rough PC port edges are real, but they are not deal-breakers for anyone who patches carefully and uses a controller. Alex, Scout Team
