130 ninjas, two story modes, and seven games' worth of fan service packed into one arena fighter - but existing Storm veterans will spot exactly where corners were cut.

My first reaction when Connections was announced was the same sigh of resignation that every Storm series fan probably let out: another compilation title instead of a true sequel. Having now spent real time with it, the picture is more complicated than that, in both good and bad ways. At its core, this is the same 3D arena brawler CyberConnect2 has been refining since 2008. Two fighters duke it out in large open arenas, burning chakra on jutsu combos, cycling through support characters for tag assists, and trading chakra-powered ultimate attacks that look genuinely spectacular on screen. The controls sit somewhere between accessible and shallow - one main attack button, directional inputs to vary combo strings, a ninja tool button that mostly serves as a quick interrupt, and a chakra button for the big stuff. Idle chakra regeneration is notably faster here than in prior entries, which critics have noted can push matches toward super-move spam. Substitution jutsus are generous too, and some of the tighter mechanics from Storm 4 have been smoothed away rather than built upon. If you want a deep competitive fighter, this is not your game. If you want to watch Baryon Mode Naruto or Karma-empowered Boruto throw hands in a blaze of particle effects, it absolutely delivers. The content split here is the real talking point. History Mode condenses the entire Naruto saga from the Chunin Exams through the Fourth Great Ninja War into a sequence of key battles stitched together by anime cutscenes and narration. The abridged format works as a crash course for newcomers, but long-time fans will clock the missing fights - Storm 3's Naruto-versus-Sasuke duel and Team 7's battle with Kaguya are both absent, which stings. The new Special Story mode, focused on Boruto and his bond with original character Nanashi against villain Merz, runs about six hours and is a genuine surprise - more emotionally invested than filler content has any right to be, with an actual animated cutscene budget and a solid final stretch. The downside is that neither mode includes the village exploration segments that gave earlier Storm games breathing room between fights. It's battle, cutscene, battle, on repeat throughout. The roster headcount - 130-plus characters including Kawaki, Jigen, Delta, Boro, Koji Kashin, Ashura and Indra Otsutsuki, and the latest forms of Naruto and Sasuke - is the biggest the series has ever fielded. Character customization returns here after being absent in Storm 4, letting players tweak appearances and victory poses using in-game currency earned through battle. The flip side is that a roster this large inevitably contains overlap, and some fighters feel like slight reskins rather than distinct playstyles. Veteran players who sunk time into Storm 4 and its DLC will likely feel the sting most, since Connections amounts to a refinement of that game rather than a true generational leap. On the technical side, the game runs cleanly at a stable 60fps on PC with full 4K support. Steam reviews land at a mixed 60 percent positive, and the frustration there is understandable: if you already own Storm 4 with all its content, paying full price for incremental mechanical tweaks and a condensed story mode is a hard sell. For anyone new to the series or returning after a long gap, however, Connections is a legitimate entry point - approachable, visually impressive, and genuinely fun to play with a friend in local versus or the offline Survival mode.
