Beyond a Steel Sky is a sci-fi adventure game from Revolution Software, the studio behind the cult 1994 classic Beneath a Steel Sky. Set in a dystopian future city called Union City, it follows Robert Foster as he tracks down a kidnapped child, peeling back layers of corporate control and social stratification along the way. It sits somewhere between a modern graphic adventure and a light puzzle-action hybrid, leaning hard on its story and world-building rather than twitch reflexes. The most distinctive mechanic is a hacking tool that lets you alter the logic of machines and NPCs around you - redirecting robots, overriding systems, and generally bending the city's automation to your advantage. It is clever and genuinely fun when the puzzles are well-designed, which is most of the time. The city itself feels alive in a way a lot of adventure games don't quite pull off: residents have routines, economies shift, and small interventions ripple outward. That systemic quality gives the game an almost immersive-sim flavour despite being a narrative-first adventure at heart. Visually it owes a clear debt to Dave Gibbons (Watchmen co-creator) who handled the art direction. Union City has a graphic-novel quality that holds up well, and the sharp character designs help you read personality at a glance. Writing is dry and witty without overdoing it - Robert Foster is a grounded protagonist in a world that keeps getting weirder, and the dialogue often lands its jokes. There is optional developer commentary too, which is a nice touch for anyone interested in how the game came together. Where it stumbles is pacing. The middle section of the game drags as the puzzle complexity plateaus and the story takes its time reconnecting threads. Some hacking solutions feel more arbitrary than logical, and a few NPC interactions require patience that casual players may not have. The game also assumes some familiarity with its predecessor, though it functions fine as a standalone. It is not a long experience by any measure - most players finish in six to ten hours - so those expecting a sprawling RPG-style adventure should recalibrate expectations. For fans of story-driven adventure games who want a bit more interactivity than a traditional point-and-click, Beyond a Steel Sky delivers a well-crafted world, a reliable sense of humour, and puzzles that mostly respect your intelligence. It earns its Very Positive Steam rating without much argument.
