That contrast, a century of rail history on the same stretch of track, is genuinely compelling rather than just a marketing hook. The simulation layer underneath all of this is powered by Dovetail's SimuGraph vehicle dynamics engine running on Unreal Engine 4, and the handling differences between the two locomotives are night and day. Learning to manage the Flying Scotsman's steam controls, reading brake pressure, watching coal consumption, and timing your approach into stations is a slow and satisfying process. The Azuma, by contrast, is almost clinical: electric traction, modern safety systems, timetable precision. TSW4 tracks your performance with a scoring system that rewards correct configuration, stopping accuracy, and on-time arrival, while penalising heavy braking, speeding, and sloppy coupling. That feedback loop is where the depth lives. The Scenario Planner and Free Roam modes add a sandbox layer on top, letting you construct your own runs or simply wander the route without AI traffic breathing down your neck. For newcomers, the Training Centre is more important than it looks. It walks you through traction types, safety systems, and basic cab operations using the Class 323 and the 8F, and skipping it will leave you stalled on the main line with no idea why the brakes aren't releasing. That said, TSW4's hand-holding is genuinely well-calibrated: it gives you enough structure to learn without gatekeeping the actual driving. Anyone willing to spend an hour in the Training Centre before touching a main-line scenario will find this surprisingly accessible, even if the full cab simulation looks intimidating from the outside. The honest criticisms are worth naming. Dovetail operates on an annual release cadence, and TSW4's incremental improvements over TSW3 (better lighting, volumetric clouds, improved Free Roam) are real but modest. Long-standing bugs have a habit of surviving version updates, and the DLC ecosystem is enormous, with additional routes priced individually in ways that add up fast if you want variety beyond the included content. The Centenary Edition specifically ships with one route and two locomotives, so players expecting a broad content library will hit that wall quickly. The Creator's Club offers community liveries and scenarios, but their usefulness depends entirely on which add-ons you already own. As a pure strategy for entry, though, this edition makes sense: one coherent route, two locomotives with genuinely different handling profiles, a clear historical narrative, and a tutorial structure that respects your time. If the East Coast Main Line grabs you, the broader TSW4 catalogue is there to expand into. If it doesn't, you haven't committed to a sprawling DLC investment you'll regret.
