IL-2 Sturmovik - Dover Bundle
Two of the most simulator-serious WWII air combat titles on PC in one bundle, covering the English Channel in 1940 and North Africa through 1942. Hardcore commitment required, but the depth payoff is real.
GamerScout Verdict
Best for dedicated sim pilots with a joystick who want the most mechanically serious Battle of Britain experience available on PC.

About IL-2 Sturmovik - Dover Bundle
I keep a mental checklist for flight sims: authentic flight modeling, per-system damage, a viable multiplayer scene, and at least a working mission editor. The Dover Bundle clears every box, though not always cleanly. What you get here is Cliffs of Dover Blitz Edition, the heavily reworked and DX11-upgraded re-release of the original 2011 sim, bundled with the Desert Wings - Tobruk expansion that shifts the theatre from the white cliffs of southern England to the dust and heat of the Western Desert campaign. That is two distinct war theatres, two distinct aircraft rosters, and enough combined content to measure playtime in months rather than hours. Cliffs of Dover Blitz is the anchor. It covers the Battle of Britain from both sides, letting you fly Spitfires and Hurricanes for the RAF or jump into Bf-109s, Bf-110s, and the rarely simulated Italian Fiat G-50 for the Axis. The base game alone offers over 47 meticulously modeled flyable aircraft or variants, including bombers like the Ju-88, Heinkel He-111, and Bristol Blenheim. The damage modeling is the headline feature: the system models airframe, engine, cooling systems, and individual control surfaces, then applies bullet hits to the correct component within the correct system. A cannon burst through your radiator behaves differently from the same burst through your aileron linkage, and your aircraft will tell you exactly which in the most brutal way possible. Engine management, prop pitch, mixture, and supercharger settings are all manual if you want them to be. Adjustable difficulty settings mean you can start with some assists and strip them away as your confidence builds. Desert Wings - Tobruk expands the roster significantly, adding the Regia Aeronautica, new RAF and Luftwaffe types including multiple Wellington variants, the Beaufighter, and the versatile Ju-88C heavy fighter in four variants. The expansion stretches the timeline from 1940 biplane engagements between Gladiators and CR-42s all the way to the more modern clashes of 1941-42. Twin-engine bomber fans in particular get a strong selection that the base game could not offer. Historically based campaigns give both the single-player-focused pilot and the mission-editor crowd a lot to work with. The built-in Full Mission Builder, which received a dedicated improvement update relatively recently, is the kind of tool that keeps a sim community alive for a decade. The community side of this title deserves direct mention because it is part of the purchase decision. Team Fusion Simulations, a volunteer modding group, effectively rescued and rebuilt Cliffs of Dover after official development wound down, and their work is now delivered as official patch content through Steam. That history matters because the sim you are buying today is substantially better than what shipped years ago. Multiplayer runs through community-run servers and can support large formations in the air simultaneously, which for a WW2 air combat sim is the mode that shows off the simulation's strengths most clearly. Co-op and PvP both work, and VR support adds another layer of immersion for those with compatible headsets. The concurrent player counts are modest, as expected for a niche hardcore sim, so peak-hour timing matters if online sessions are your priority. Who should buy this bundle: anyone with a quality joystick, patience to read the manual seriously, and a genuine interest in the specific aircraft and theatres covered. Anyone expecting pick-up-and-play accessibility or a forgiving learning curve will struggle. The sim rewards study and persistence rather than reflexes alone, and that is exactly the kind of depth that keeps the dedicated community active long after a title's commercial peak.
