Company of Heroes 2: The Western Front Armies - Double Pack drops you into the multiplayer side of Relic's WWII RTS without asking you to first buy the base game. It bundles two distinct armies - the US Forces (USF) and the Oberkommando West (OKW) - each built around a meaningfully different doctrine of play. You get both sides of the same theatre, which means you can study one faction to counter the other. That is exactly the kind of asymmetric design I appreciate, because it creates decision trees rather than mirror matches. The USF is an aggressive, combined-arms force that rewards forward pressure. Riflemen with Browning Automatic Rifles, M1 Garands, and quick-call mechanized support push a tempo-heavy game plan. The OKW is slower and more deliberate, leaning on powerful vehicles like the Panzer IV and the Jagdpanzer IV, supplemented by forward supply trucks called Schwere Panzer Headquarters that anchor your late-game economy. Learning the OKW's setup pacing is genuinely interesting - getting your half-tracks and supply structures into position before the enemy armor arrives is a small puzzle every match. Both factions have commander upgrades that branch into specialized strategies, so game-to-game variance is real. For newcomers to Company of Heroes 2, the learning curve here is steeper than the tutorial acknowledges. The standalone does not include the full COH2 campaign, and the in-game guidance assumes some familiarity with the cover system, line-of-sight mechanics, and resource point control that define the series. That said, I would argue this is still a reasonable entry point if you accept that your first five or ten matches exist purely for education. The two-faction focus actually helps: you are not overwhelmed by six rosters at once. Pick USF, learn aggression, then pick OKW, learn patience. The mechanical gap between "understanding the basics" and "winning consistently" is wide but crossable. Multiplayer quality depends on how populated the servers are, and in 2024 you are dealing with a ten-year-old game with a loyal but not enormous community. Matchmaking can be slow at off-peak hours. That is the honest limitation here. The 86 percent positive Steam rating reflects people who stuck around long enough to reach the depth, not necessarily smooth onboarding. The Metacritic score of 80 aligns with the general consensus that the factions are well-designed but the value proposition is narrow compared to owning the full COH2 collection. Modding and custom lobbies extend the shelf life, and the COH2 mod ecosystem is active enough to justify keeping the game installed long-term. If you already own COH2 and just want the two Western Front factions, the standalone version of each is available separately. The Double Pack is the better deal if you are coming in fresh and expect to play both sides, which you should - you will not fully understand OKW until you have lost to it as USF a few times.
