A flashy 3D fighter from Team Ninja that's surprisingly easy to pick up for newcomers, built around counters, wall splats, and a Break Gauge that makes everyone look like a pro at least once per round.

Dead or Alive 6 is a 3D one-on-one fighter from Team Ninja, released in March 2019 as the sixth main entry in the long-running DOA series. If you've ever wanted to host a couch fighting game night and worried that half your crew would get bodied in thirty seconds flat, DOA 6 is actually one of the more welcoming picks in the genre. The core button layout keeps things tight: five inputs covering Hold, Throw, Punch, Kick, and Special, which means even first-timers can string together something that looks intentional. Button-mashing the Special button produces a four-hit Fatal Rush that burns the Break Gauge and feels satisfying without requiring any lab time. That's a low bar to clear for newcomers, but there's a real ceiling here too. The game's identity has always lived in its defensive layer, and that hasn't changed. The 4-way Hold system lets you counter high, mid, or low attacks by predicting your opponent's next strike. Land it right and you either score a free combo or reset the neutral, which is deeply rewarding once it clicks. Wall splats and multi-tier stage transitions add environmental chaos to fights, and the new Danger Zones scattered across arenas punish anyone careless enough to get cornered. The Break Gauge introduced two tools: Break Hold at half meter for a defensive reversal, and Break Blow at full meter for a big cinematic punish. Slow-motion cameras kick in during these moments, which honestly makes local play feel like a highlight reel. The roster sits at 24 characters at base, with returning series veterans like Kasumi, Ryu Hayabusa, Tina Armstrong, and Jann Lee alongside two new additions: NiCO, a lightning-imbued fighter with mid-combo stances, and Diego, a brawler-type. DLC seasons later added guest characters Mai Shiranui and Kula Diamond from King of Fighters, plus returning DOA favourites. The tutorial and DOA Quest mode are genuinely solid, walking both new and veteran players through movelists and combo challenges. For a couch session, that tutorial investment pays off fast. Where DOA 6 stumbles is pretty consistent with what critics flagged at launch and beyond. The story mode is a messy, chapter-hopping affair that only makes sense if you've been following the series since the early 2000s, and even then it feels undercooked. Online infrastructure launched in rough shape with no lobbies or friend invites at launch, and while patches addressed some of that, the online experience has never been the game's strong suit. The cosmetic unlock grind is also genuinely painful, with costume parts trickling in at a pace that frustrates long-term players. The DLC catalogue is extensive and padded, which has annoyed a fair portion of the community. For a Saturday night couch session though, none of those complaints kill the fun. Split-screen local multiplayer is in, the game runs well on PC, and the spectacle of Break Blow slow-mo moments gets a genuine reaction from the room every time. Pick this up if you want an accessible fighter with enough depth to keep dedicated players busy, and don't expect the story to make much sense. Riley, Scout Team
