A 91-rated fighting game that critics adored at launch and its own player base has been slowly review-bombing ever since - the gap tells you everything you need to know before buying.

I have a hard time thinking of another game where the 91 Metacritic score and the 55% Steam rating tell two completely different stories, and both are technically correct. At launch, TEKKEN 8 was genuinely excellent - the best the series had been in years, maybe ever, depending on who you ask. The heat system overhauled combat by pushing both players into proactive, aggressive exchanges, the roster of 32 characters felt varied and distinct, and the visuals built on Unreal Engine 5 set a new visual bar for the genre. Frame data was finally baked into training mode from day one, combo challenges covered every character, and the Special Style option gave newcomers a fighting chance against veterans without gutting the depth for people who wanted it. The single-player suite was a genuine surprise. The Dark Awakens story mode follows Jin's fight against Kazuya and, while the plot stays as ridiculous as Tekken has always been, it moves at a good pace and sticks to Jin's perspective rather than jumping between fifteen characters. Arcade Quest doubles as a structured tutorial wrapped in a custom-avatar meta-story - it is the most painless on-ramp to a technical fighter I have seen in a long time. Character Episodes give every fighter their own short arc, and the wackier endings are worth seeing if you have any attachment to the cast. The one sore spot in single-player is the Tekken Force-style beat-em-up sections in the later story chapters - clunky, unbalanced, and frustrating in a way that feels out of place next to everything else. Online is where the story gets complicated. The rollback netcode works, crossplay is present, and when matches connect they feel smooth. But matchmaking has been a persistent complaint, and the post-launch content strategy is the actual source of the Steam score collapse. A Battle Pass landed on top of an already-expensive Season Pass and in-game store, and the community reaction was severe enough to drag recent reviews to "Mostly Negative" at multiple points. Balance patches have also been divisive - the game has leaned harder into offensive, aggressive mechanics with each season update, and a vocal portion of the long-time competitive community feels that defensive options have been steadily eroded. The game director publicly acknowledged a disconnect between what the developers are building and what the community wants, which is not a reassuring thing to read if you are a returning Tekken 7 veteran. For a newcomer or a casual fan, most of that noise sits at a level of the game you will not reach for dozens of hours. The core fighting is still excellent, the training tools are the best in the series, and the single-player content justifies the time investment even if you never touch ranked. If you are a competitive-minded returning player who lived through Tekken 7's late-game balance and wants that style of neutral, the current state of the game may genuinely frustrate you. Go in clear-eyed about the monetization model and check the recent patch notes before committing. Alex, Scout Team
