Five episodes of Homestar Runner chaos packed into one season - a nostalgia hit for fans of the web cartoon and a decent point-and-click adventure for anyone who enjoys absurdist comedy puzzles.

I came into this one as a casual Homestar Runner observer rather than a die-hard, and that turned out to be a useful perspective. Season 1 collects all five episodes of Telltale's adventure series - Homestar Ruiner, Strong Badia the Free, Baddest of the Bands, Dangeresque 3, and 8-Bit is Enough - each built around a different absurd premise kicked off by one of Strong Bad's infamous fan emails. The comedy logic here is deliberately unhinged, and that shapes absolutely everything about how the game plays. The core loop is classic point-and-click: wander Free Country USA, pick up improbably named items, and combine or deploy them to solve puzzles that operate on cartoon logic rather than anything resembling real-world sense. Talking to every character multiple times and exhausting your inventory on everything in a room are both legitimate strategies - and expected ones. Walkthroughs are a realistic companion for most players at least once per episode, because the puzzle solutions can veer from charmingly left-field to genuinely obscure. Beyond the main adventure loop, each episode layers in its own arcade-style minigame - the first episode drops you into a top-down boxing game called Snake Boxer 5, and later episodes riff on different genre parodies. There are also collectible 3x5 cards used to build your own Teen Girl Squad comics, a customizable map, and post-completion extended play sections where you can keep exploring after the credits roll. Episode quality does shift across the season. The first entry, Homestar Ruiner, is the roughest: the pacing of a short-form web cartoon stretched into a few hours of gameplay exposed the format's limitations early on. The second episode, Strong Badia the Free, is widely regarded as a marked improvement, with sharper jokes and a more structured premise. By the final episode, which plunges into 8-bit video game parody territory, the series had found a confident groove. The whole season runs around 10-15 hours depending on how much optional content you chase, with individual episodes clocking 2-4 hours each. Here is the honest boundary: this game is warm and funny if you have any affection for the Homestar Runner universe, and considerably flatter without that context. The Brothers Chaps were directly involved in writing the scripts, so the voice, tone, and character dynamics feel genuinely faithful to the source material rather than licensed-product hollow. But the point-and-click mechanics themselves are not doing anything novel - this is Telltale's standard adventure engine dressed in Homestar clothes, with all the pathfinding quirks and occasionally arbitrary puzzle logic that entails. Worth noting: the game was pulled from Steam in 2023 after a rights dispute, so availability through third-party key sellers is the current reality, and compatibility with modern Windows can require some tinkering for certain episodes.
