Legacies adds the cyborg Tinkers faction to Stars in Shadow, flipping core resource logic on its head and dropping a mysterious Herald into every game. Compact DLC, real strategic impact.

Stars in Shadow is a turn-based space 4X that wears its Master of Orion 2 inspiration openly, built by a two-person studio with a hand-drawn comic book art style. The base game covers the full loop: colonize star systems, manage farms, mines, and factories on each world, research four eras of technology, design custom ships, and resolve fleet battles on a tactical grid where you can actually take manual control instead of auto-resolving. Map sizes run up to 85 star systems with up to ten planets each, and victory arrives through military conquest, allied victory, or winning the galactic presidency. The base game holds a 75 Metascore, which is a fair representation of a focused, accessible 4X that doesn't try to out-Stellaris Stellaris. Legacies plugs into that foundation with a set of additions that punch noticeably above their size. The headlining addition is the Tinkers, a cyborg civilization that worships Dzibix, a planet-spanning ancient megamachine. From a resource management standpoint, they are a genuinely different puzzle: no food requirement at all, low science output, but tremendous production throughput. Population growth works differently too since Tinkers can spend metal to manufacture new citizens rather than relying on organic reproduction. That food-free opening means your early build-order thinking resets from scratch. You are not scanning for farm-friendly worlds; you are hunting metal deposits and planning around your forge systems, which repair ships mid-combat and replenish fighters and ammunition during engagements. The Tinkers' ship roster is fully custom, with increased armor, built-in self-repair, and dedicated point-defense and fighter-handling systems. One of the most compelling additions is mobile bases: large, customizable station-like structures that you can design and refit just like regular warships as your tech tree unlocks. The expandable tech tree view itself was a notable quality-of-life addition bundled with this DLC, letting you map out research prerequisites and plan your unlock path several steps ahead rather than navigating blind. For anyone who already thinks in research queues, this alone is a meaningful upgrade. Beyond the Tinkers, Legacies adds the Arda Seed as a minor NPC faction, a hyperspace-dwelling group with unique starship and station types that focuses on hyperlane mechanics. More interesting for every playthrough regardless of your chosen faction is the Herald, a wandering neutral entity that moves between civilizations and trades technological secrets in exchange for metal. Since metal can feel scarce, timing your metal stockpile to intercept the Herald before rivals do becomes a recurring mid-game calculation. Hyperspace Anomaly locations and researchable Artifacts round out the new content, adding discoverable map objectives that reward exploration investment. The rough edge most critics flagged is AI turn times slowing down noticeably once the full galaxy is revealed, and the feeling that rival factions do not react aggressively enough to a Tinker empire's expansion. Those are real friction points, not dealbreakers. For existing Stars in Shadow players, this is a no-debate purchase. The Tinkers force you to rethink opening strategy, mid-game economy, and fleet composition simultaneously, which is exactly what a good faction DLC should do. New players should start with the base game to internalize the food-and-science baseline before the Tinkers' absence of it means anything tactically. The DLC sits at around 81% positive on Steam across 32 user reviews, a thin sample but directionally consistent with the broader critical reception. Diego, Scout Team
