Wider than the Milky Way, shallower than a loading screen puddle, Starfield rewards patient explorers and ship-building obsessives, but frustrates anyone expecting Skyrim-level narrative magic in space.

I came into Starfield expecting the RPG equivalent of a moon landing and walked away with something closer to a very long road trip with occasional firefights. That gap between expectation and reality is the most honest thing I can tell you before you spend any money here. Bethesda's first new IP in a generation is genuinely ambitious, but ambition and execution are not the same planet. On its best days, Starfield is a satisfying action RPG with real mechanical depth to poke at. The gunplay is the strongest Bethesda has ever shipped, weapons have genuine impact, and the jetpack changes the shape of combat in ways that feel fresh through the first twenty hours. The skill tree is broad, covering everything from weapon damage types and lockpicking to persuasion modifiers and boost pack manoeuvrability, though it leans toward a priority list rather than true build diversity. The ship builder is where the game hides its soul: modular, weirdly absorbing, and the one system that genuinely rewards obsessive tinkering. Companion characters in factions like the Crimson Fleet questline, widely cited as the game's narrative high point, show flashes of what Bethesda can do when the writing team is firing properly. The problems are real and they are structural. Space travel sounds cinematic on paper; in practice it mostly means a menu, a loading screen, and another menu. Fast travel is not a shortcut, it is the only viable mode of transport. Planet surfaces span enormous distances but recycle outpost layouts with a frequency that gets immersion-breaking fast. The procedural generation that fills those 1,000-plus planets produces quantity over quality at a ratio that would make a loot goblin flinch. The main story is earnest but slow to ignite, and the opening hours demand patience most players would rather spend elsewhere. The New Game Plus structure, which Bethesda themselves suggested as a remedy for disappointed players, is an interesting idea that not everyone will find worth the investment. For RPG fans specifically: manage your expectations around narrative consequence. Choices shift quest outcomes and faction standing, but the world does not reshape itself around your decisions the way a Disco Elysium or a BG3 does. The writing has good moments, especially in side content, but the dialogue rarely earns a second read. What Starfield does deliver is the classic Bethesda sandbox loop, go somewhere, find something unexpected, get distracted for four hours, just transplanted into a setting where the seams show more than in Tamriel or the Commonwealth. If that loop has historically worked for you, it will probably work here too, with lower-gravity physics applied. Monika, Scout Team
