Built for players who want deliberate, parry-driven swordplay and a survival-horror atmosphere over flashy combo chains.

Acerca de Onimusha: Way of the Sword - Premium Deluxe Edition
I have been waiting for someone to revive this series since Dawn of Dreams quietly ended things in 2006, so the fact that Capcom finally did it with a full new engine and a fresh protagonist is genuinely worth talking about. Way of the Sword puts you in control of Miyamoto Musashi, a historically rooted swordsman who finds himself bound to the Oni Gauntlet, a mystical artifact that lets him absorb souls from every enemy he cuts down. The setting is Edo-era Kyoto, but corrupted by clouds of Malice and overrun by demonic Genma creatures, which gives the city a survival-horror atmosphere that the original series wore proudly. This is not an open-world game or a looter brawler. It is a focused, third-person action title built on Capcom's RE Engine, and the pacing reflects that precision. Combat is the entire spine of the game, and Capcom has been deliberate about what kind of combat it wants to be. Light attacks, heavy attacks, and a dedicated parry button form the base layer. Nail your parry timing and you can trigger an Issen counter, a one-flash critical strike that punishes enemies for swinging at you. Miss the window and you eat stamina damage. Previews consistently described the feel as deliberate and exacting, closer in spirit to the older Onimusha titles than to the flow-state combo systems that have dominated the genre lately. The director has publicly confirmed the team is not chasing impossibly high difficulty, so this is not a soulslike by design, even if the precision demands will feel familiar to fans of that style. The weapon set extends beyond dual blades to spears and bows, and the Oni Gauntlet's soul system gives you three distinct soul types to manage: yellow for health, blue for upgrades, and red to charge the Oni Armaments, which are powerful, limited-use weapons that hit very hard when the bar is full. Environmental combat adds another layer. Enemies can be herded into burning ground, and set pieces like overturned carts can be used offensively. The corrupted streets of Kyoto are stage-based rather than free-roaming, which keeps the pace controlled and the tension high. Boss variety looks strong from the demo builds, with massive Genma creatures alongside one-on-one duels against Sasaki Ganryu, Musashi's historical rival given a supernatural twist. Hands-on previews from multiple outlets flagged that exploration of the corrupted city is paced more like a survival-horror title than a spectacle fighter, which is either a selling point or a caution depending on what you came for. This is a pre-launch, pre-review product page. The Premium Deluxe Edition exists as a distinct purchase tier, though the specific contents of that edition have not yet been fully confirmed in public materials at the time of writing. What is confirmed is the game itself: a single-player, third-person action title from Capcom, running on the RE Engine, launching September 4, 2026 on PC via Steam alongside console platforms. If you bounced off modern spectacle fighters for being too lenient or too combo-list-dependent, and you want something that rewards reading enemy timing and spending your souls wisely, Way of the Sword is shaping up to be the most interesting action release of its launch window. If you need an open world, customizable builds, or co-op, look elsewhere.
