I approached Mortal Kombat 4 expecting the series' usual blood-soaked spectacle, but what I found was a genuinely awkward transition point. This was the first game to swap sprites for 3D models, and the result feels stiff, character animations lack the fluidity of its 2D predecessors, and the weapon system (a new gimmick) often feels tacked on rather than integral to combos. The roster is solid enough, and there's fan-service in the character designs, but the gameplay core hasn't aged well. Inputs feel sluggish, hit detection is unreliable, and matches can turn into awkward spacing games where neither player feels in control. If you're a series completionist or studying MK's evolution, it's worth a look. For everyone else, the jump to Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance or later titles is the smarter move. This is a museum piece, not a fighting game to boot up for fun in 2024.
