Four players, a Sludge God, and enough mutant hordes to make Left 4 Dead veterans sweat. Toxic Commando's Blood Edition is the complete package for co-op FPS fans who want 80s horror energy with modern class depth.

My first session with Toxic Commando lasted longer than I planned, and most of that time I spent as the Operator, watching my combat drone ignite and knock back waves of sludge-soaked undead while a teammate hauled our truck out of a toxic bog with a winch. That combination alone tells you everything about what this game is reaching for: it's a four-player co-op FPS that splices Left 4 Dead's horde chaos with off-road vehicle traversal that would feel at home in a MudRunner title. The result is stranger and more ambitious than the elevator pitch suggests, and largely in a good way. The four-class system is the spine of everything here. Strike is your AoE damage merchant, hurling Fireballs into dense clusters of what the game calls Homo Mortis. Defender anchors the team with a barrier and raw tankiness, carrying extra grenades and soaking hits so the rest of the squad doesn't. Medic keeps everyone breathing, and Operator brings a combat drone that evolves through upgrades into a surprisingly versatile tool: base attacks, Dragonbreath flames, penetrating Lancer shots, and a concussive Impulse blast that buys precious seconds when a horde spills your position. Each class has tiered perk unlocks at levels 5, 10, and 15, and over thirty customisation options per archetype. Skill trees can be reset at the hub using in-mission collectibles called Sludgite, so experimenting with off-meta builds doesn't lock you into a bad run permanently. The Blood Edition also includes an exclusive grenade launcher rifle that functions like a blissful cheat code against early hordes - it's over-the-top, but it fits the game's tone perfectly. The vehicle layer is where Toxic Commando earns its identity. Trucks get bogged down in toxic sludge, tire pressure matters, and mindless acceleration turns your ride into a stationary target. Operators can pull vehicles free faster than anyone else, which makes the class genuinely valuable outside of combat. Horde set pieces themselves are well-constructed: swarms build gradually through the game's Swarm Engine before erupting into full chaos, with special infected, boss encounters, toxic pools, and collapsing structures layered on top. When it all clicks in a coordinated squad - Defender barrier holding the line, Strike dropping Fireballs inside it, Operator drone marking stragglers - the game hits a satisfying rhythm that the genre rarely beats. John Carpenter composed the score himself, and the pulpy, tension-ratcheting music earns its place. That said, Toxic Commando has honest limitations. Solo play with bots reveals the seams faster than squad play does. Downtime between horde events, spent planning routes and driving between objectives, can drag for players expecting wall-to-wall combat. The story is deliberately thin, a scrappy mercenary crew versus an eldritch horror, and it treats that leanness as a feature rather than a flaw. It lands somewhere in the mid-70s on review aggregators, and that range is accurate: this is a confident, enjoyable co-op shooter that does one thing exceptionally well (coordinated horde survival with real class synergy) without reinventing the genre around it. Nightmare difficulty post-campaign and promised post-launch content give the game legs, but the core experience is built for friends, not for solo grinders. If you have a regular crew of three and a taste for 80s horror absurdity - katanas, grenades, exploding trucks, a villain called the Sludge God - this delivers exactly what it promises without overstaying its welcome. Best for squads of four who want Left 4 Dead-style horde chaos with class depth and a side of toxic truck physics.
