Holy Grail War politics set in Edo-period Japan, backed by a combat system deep enough to reward stance-switchers and shallow enough to frustrate anyone expecting Sekiro. Worth it if the story hooks you in the first hour.

I went into this one expecting a glorified Warriors clone with a Fate skin slapped on top, and what I got instead was something genuinely more interesting than that, even if it never quite closes the gap between its ambitions and its execution. Fate/Samurai Remnant drops you into the Waxing Moon Ritual, this entry's version of the Holy Grail War: seven Masters and their summoned Servant spirits fighting for the right to have any wish granted. Your protagonist is Miyamoto Iori, the adopted son of the legendary Miyamoto Musashi, a reluctant fighter trying to live quietly until the ritual marks him and thrusts Saber into his life. The Edo-period setting is handled with more care than I expected, and the writing around the supporting cast, the rival Masters and Servants especially, is where the story actually earns its keep. The combat sits at an unusual crossroads between action RPG and Musou, and that identity crisis is both its strength and its most obvious flaw. Iori fights using five sword stances drawn from Musashi's Book of Five Rings: Earth and Water come early, covering heavy single-target strikes and crowd-clearing whirling slashes respectively, while Wind, Fire, and Void unlock through the story, each carrying a meaningfully different risk profile. Fire, for instance, rewards low-health aggression with raw power, while Void's iaido flurry is high-damage but punishing if you mistime the charge. Layered on top is the Katon magic system, which spends gem fragments on offensive spells or self-healing, and the Link Strike system, which lets you tag-team attacks with Saber or issue solo commands for devastating combined hits. On paper, the build variety is genuinely impressive for the genre. In practice, the game occasionally fumbles it: boss encounters drag because of overtuned super armor, and the difficulty curve feels like a war of attrition rather than a skill test at several key points. The Leyline system on the world map adds a layer of territory control that I found refreshing at first, and annoying by the midgame. You are managing a tactical tug-of-war across Edo while chasing the story, and when the Leyline puzzles escalate in complexity they have a habit of breaking the narrative momentum right when the plot is heating up. Pacing issues like this are the game's most consistent critic. The main story runs roughly 25 hours, and multiple endings give it real replay value, but a meaningful chunk of that time is padded with filler fetch quests that feel copy-pasted across chapters. Iori himself is a fairly passive lead whose growth is more mechanical than emotional, and if you come in expecting a Fate protagonist with the internal monologue depth of a Shirou or an Emiya, you will feel the gap. The Servants and rival Masters carry the dramatic weight, and there are scenes between them that absolutely land. The Digital Deluxe Edition bundles in the digital artbook and the original soundtrack alongside the base game. The soundtrack, composed by Keita Haga and Daisuke Shinoda, ranges from atmospheric Edo ambience to propulsive battle themes, and it is one of the better reasons to care about that art bundle. The PC port lands at a solid 90 percent positive rating on Steam at launch, which reflects a community that skews heavily toward existing Fate fans. Newcomers to the franchise can follow the story, but the mythology runs two decades deep and the game assumes a certain baseline familiarity with Holy Grail War logic. If you have zero exposure to Fate/stay night or Fate/Zero, expect to spend time with the in-game glossary. For RPG players who prioritize narrative texture over combat perfection, this hits more than it misses. The setting is distinctive, several of the Servant arcs are genuinely moving, and the stance-switching system has enough depth to keep combat interesting past the midpoint. But if you need boss encounters that reward reading and reacting rather than outlasting, or a protagonist whose inner voice you actually want to spend 25 hours with, temper your expectations accordingly. Best for Fate series fans and action-RPG players who can tolerate pacing stumbles in exchange for a rich cast and layered combat stances.
