A gloriously over-the-top tactical RPG where summoning the wrong demon is just the start of your problems. Hundreds of hours of number-crunching chaos await.

Disgaea 2 PC is a port of the PS2 tactical RPG classic, now with widescreen support and both English and Japanese voice acting included. You play as Adell, a hot-headed human living on a world called Veldime, which has been cursed by the fearsome Overlord Zenon and is slowly transforming its inhabitants into demons. Adell's family attempts to summon Zenon to settle the score, and naturally they get it spectacularly wrong, pulling in Zenon's spoiled demon princess Rozalin instead. The two are bound together and forced to cooperate, which sets the stage for a story that is far warmer and more character-driven than its absurdist premise suggests. The writing leans hard into anime comedy tropes, but the central relationship between Adell and Rozalin actually earns its emotional beats by the end. On the battlefield, Disgaea 2 operates on a grid-based system where positioning, unit stacking, and combo chains are everything. The "Magichange" mechanic lets monster units transform into weapons for humanoid characters, and the "Geo Panel" system creates colored tile effects that can flip an entire map's difficulty in seconds if you ignore them. There is also the Dark Assembly, a political body of demons you can bribe or strong-arm into passing bills that reshape your game - unlocking new classes, maps, and difficulty modifiers. These systems layer on top of each other in ways that feel deliberately overwhelming at first, but deeply satisfying once the gears start turning in your head at two in the morning. Here is the honest warning, though: Disgaea 2 is a number game in the most literal sense. Characters can be reincarnated, losing levels but carrying forward stat bonuses, allowing you to build units that reach level 9999 through repeated cycles. The Item World - a randomly generated dungeon inside every piece of equipment - can swallow dozens of hours on its own. If you are looking for a tight 20-hour RPG with a clear narrative throughline, this is not that game. The story wraps up in roughly 30-40 hours, but the post-game content is essentially a second, much harder game aimed at players who want to optimize builds into the stratosphere. Padding? Arguably yes. But also the entire point for a certain kind of player. The PC port is solid without being exceptional. It runs cleanly, includes all the extra content from the PS2 and PSP versions (including extra story chapters and playable characters), and the added widescreen resolution is genuinely appreciated. What it does not offer is modernized UI or any quality-of-life overhaul, so navigating menus still feels like it was designed for a 2006 handheld. Veterans will not mind. Newcomers will spend twenty minutes trying to find the reincarnation option the first time. The Steam community guides are your friend here. For RPG players who care primarily about narrative and worldbuilding depth on the level of, say, a Planescape or a Disco Elysium, Disgaea 2 will feel like a different species of game. The story is fun and surprisingly touching, but it is not the main event. The main event is the combat system, the build theory, and the almost perverse joy of watching your carefully engineered unit deal damage numbers that scroll off the screen. If you accept that the game is essentially a puzzle box disguised as a JRPG, and you have time to give it, the 92% Steam rating is not an accident. Monika, Scout Team

Best for tactical RPG fans who want deep build systems and hundreds of hours of content over tight narrative focus.
