If you remember the original Cossacks series fondly, this is essentially that formula rebuilt in a modern engine. If you are coming in fresh, think Age of Empires but with armies that can swell to several thousand individual soldiers and a supply chain that will punish you for every idle moment. The economic layer is where the game earns its depth. Food, wood, stone, iron, gold, and coal all feed separate production queues, and the balance shifts constantly depending on which units you are fielding. Musketeers eat food and burn through ammunition; cannon crews demand iron and coal just to keep firing. Getting the ratios wrong does not just slow your expansion - it can cause your entire army to desert mid-battle, which is a mechanic lifted straight from the original games and still one of the most brutal feedback loops in the genre. Tutorial campaigns walk through the basics, but the game does not hold your hand past the opening hours. New players should treat the first few skirmishes against AI as paid practice. The AI on standard difficulty is adequate for learning build orders and basic flanking. Crank it up and you will see it apply pressure on multiple fronts, though it occasionally over-commits cavalry in ways that feel scripted rather than reactive. Multiplayer is where the strategic ceiling actually reveals itself: coordinated naval invasions, chokepoint sieges, and the diplomatic chaos of team games all demand a level of macro management that single-player rarely forces. The Steam Workshop is active enough to find additional maps, scenarios, and balance tweaks, which meaningfully extends the lifespan beyond the included campaigns and the handful of playable nations. The weaknesses are real and worth naming. Unit pathfinding is inconsistent - large infantry formations can bottleneck against each other in ways that require manual intervention during fights that should be automated. The campaign missions lean heavily on scripted events rather than sandbox emergence, which makes replaying them feel thin. Sea battles are functional but lack the same decision density as land engagements. And while the Complete Experience edition bundles in all released DLC, the additional nations and scenarios it includes are incremental improvements rather than transformative content. For strategy players who want something between the simplicity of a base-building RTS and the spreadsheet depth of a grand strategy title, Cossacks 3 sits in a specific and underserved pocket. The unit scale alone produces moments no other RTS in this price tier can replicate. Approach it with patience on the economy screen, and the late-game battles where two 3,000-soldier armies collide will justify the time invested.
