I appreciate a platformer that knows what it is. Canyon Capers, created by the original 1992 designers, strips away everything but the core loop: navigate treacherous canyon passages, time your jumps, collect treasures, reach the exit. No complex combos, no story cutscenes breaking rhythm, no tutorial padding. The pixel-art environments are clean and readable, the controls responsive enough that failure feels fair. It's arcade-focused, which means short levels designed for repeated attempts and mastery, not a sprawling open world. The trade-off is that simplicity can feel thin if you're chasing narrative depth or modern polish. Canyon Capers won't surprise you mechanically, and its 2014 pixel aesthetics, while charming, lack the visual personality of standout indie platformers. But if you miss the days when a platformer just asked you to be precise and patient, this delivers exactly that without apology.
