The 1997 Westwood classic is genuinely worth playing in 2025 - but the 'Enhanced' wrapper around it is a mess that you'll have to fight through to reach the good stuff.

My first honest reaction to Blade Runner: Enhanced Edition was confusion about what exactly Nightdive thought they were enhancing. The studio has a strong track record - Turok, Shadowman, Quake - all treated with care and real quality-of-life thinking. Here, they had to reverse-engineer the entire 1997 Westwood original from scratch because the source code was lost, and the result is a product where the word "Enhanced" keeps getting harder to say with a straight face. The AI-upscaled visuals smooth over the gritty rain-soaked texture work that gave the original its identity, backgrounds turn muddy and hard to read, and the lighting in several areas is so dark that clues - a photograph, a piece of cheese - can be nearly invisible unless you sweep your cursor over every centimeter of screen waiting for a color change. This is not a restoration. It is, at best, a rough approximation. And yet the game underneath all that? Still genuinely compelling. You play as Ray McCoy, a rookie Blade Runner investigating a string of animal murders tied to suspected replicants in a sprawling neo-noir Los Angeles. The story runs parallel to the film rather than retelling it, which was a smart call in 1997 and still pays off today. The writing and voice acting hold up far better than the visuals. Two signature mechanics pulled straight from the film - the ESPER machine for zooming into photographs to find hidden clues, and the Voight-Kampff test for interrogating suspects - give the detective loop a genuinely satisfying texture. The KIA system lets you manage gathered evidence like a proper investigator. On PC with a mouse, all of this works the way point-and-click is supposed to work; the color-coded cursor (grey for movement, green for interaction, red for shooting) clicks into place intuitively once you get your bearings. The replay value is one of the game's legitimate strengths that gets buried under the launch-era complaints. NPC replicant status is randomized at the start of each run, alternate paths branch off based on who you spare or retire, and McCoy's own identity - human or replicant - is a choice that shapes the story's direction. There are reportedly around thirteen different endings depending on your decisions across a playthrough. That is genuine structural ambition for a late-nineties adventure game, and it still holds up conceptually even if the wrapper around it is creaky. Some good news for PC players specifically: post-launch patches added the Blade Runner Classic (ScummVM-based) as a separate executable, so buying the Steam version actually nets you what many consider the superior build alongside the Enhanced Edition proper. If you are on PC and willing to tinker with which executable you launch, this package is considerably more defensible than the launch version reviews suggest. The Enhanced Edition's original graphics toggle also lets you ditch the smeared upscaling. The game was rough at release - the OpenCritic average landed around 56 from 17 critics - but the patched PC version is a meaningfully better experience than what console players were handed in mid-2022. Bottom line on who this is for: adventure game fans who can handle a complete absence of hand-holding, a color-coded cursor in place of a quest marker, and some darkness that is literal rather than metaphorical. Fans of cyberpunk noir and the Blade Runner universe specifically will find the atmosphere and story worth the friction. Everyone expecting a polished modern remaster should adjust those expectations significantly before clicking buy. Alex, Scout Team
