Charming cel-shaded platformer with a cat-girl bounty hunter at its center -- great for low-stakes weekend play, rough around the edges everywhere else.

I went in expecting something forgettable and came out genuinely surprised by how much personality Blade Kitten packs into a fairly thin mechanical shell. You play as Kit Ballard, a half-human, half-cat bounty hunter working a case on the artificial planetoid Hollow Wish, and the world around her is legitimately pretty -- anime-inspired cel shading, sprawling levels with visible foreground and background layers, and a color palette that holds up well enough on a modern monitor. The core loop is 2.5D action-platforming with a lot of wall-climbing and ceiling-clinging built into Kit's moveset. She can double-jump, scale most vertical surfaces by simply walking into them, and fight using the Darque Blade -- a semi-autonomous floating sword that handles both close-range slashes and a mid-range projectile throw. There is also a stationary shield for absorbing heavy hits, a small companion named Skiffy who can retrieve currency from out-of-reach spots, and occasional Noot-riding sections where you sprint across open terrain on a dinosaur-like mount. The traversal is the highlight: Kit moves fluidly enough that simply getting from A to B feels satisfying, especially when you are hunting down the collectible Hex scattered through hidden side paths. Here is where the honest accounting starts. The combat is shallow by any serious action-platformer standard. There are no combos, the Darque Blade largely acts on its own, and most encounters come down to mashing the attack button until something stops moving. Enemy variety is thin across the episode, and the difficulty rarely asks anything of you -- health regenerates between fights, and the shield ability makes the toughest spots manageable without much thought. Critics at launch landed on a Metacritic score of 52/100, pointing at bland combat, some animation jank, and a story that leans on cutscenes full of dated internet slang without ever actually going anywhere. The Steam player base, by contrast, sits at 83 percent positive across over a thousand reviews -- a gap that tells you a lot about the audience this clicks for versus the audience it does not. The story is worth a specific warning: it is episodic, ends without a real resolution, and Episode 2 did eventually arrive on Steam years later as separate DLC. If you want a complete arc, you need both pieces. The PC version also controls noticeably better with a gamepad -- keyboard and mouse work, but the analog movement was clearly designed for a thumbstick, and the floatiness people complain about largely disappears when you plug in a controller. Blade Kitten is doing one thing genuinely well: it built a visually distinct world with a likable lead and made getting around that world feel light and fun. If you are burned out on punishing precision platformers and want something easygoing with charm to spare, this scratches that itch without much friction. If you need strong combat depth, a finished narrative, or a challenge that pushes back, you will run dry inside a few hours and wonder what the fuss was about. Alex, Scout Team

Best for casual platformer fans who want a pretty, low-pressure weekend game and do not mind thin combat or an incomplete story.
