Part zen tank-builder, part business sim with real teeth - Aquarist rewards patient players who don't mind managing water temperature and fish compatibility alongside customer orders and shop expansion.

I'll be straight with you: I went into Aquarist expecting a shallow decorating toy with a thin management wrapper, and I came out genuinely surprised by how much is going on under the surface. FreeMind has built something that sits between a relaxing sandbox and a genuine career sim, and for the most part it holds together well. The core loop starts small. You inherit a goldfish tank, learn the basics of filtration, temperature control, feeding, and fish compatibility, then gradually open a shop and start taking on client jobs. Those jobs are where the game shows its best side. You are asked to build aquariums for bars, museums, restaurants, and private homes, and the specs change every time. One client wants a peaceful planted freshwater tank, the next wants a piranha display. Getting the water chemistry wrong, mismatching species, or skipping the algae scrub will cost you. The ecological simulation layer is light but present enough to matter: a small deviation in tank conditions can kill one species while another thrives, and that tension keeps you on your toes during the early hours. The creature roster goes well beyond goldfish. Sharks, octopuses, sea turtles, rays, manta rays, arapaima, cuttlefish, glofish, and various shrimp species all show up as you unlock and expand. There is a Creative Mode sandbox with no client briefs if you just want to build a personal showpiece without pressure. The progression arc runs from a garage shop through exhibition halls and an aquatic museum, eventually landing at a full oceanarium - it is a long climb but each step feels earned. DLC extends the game further with a Japanese garden theme, an aquatic supermarket mode, and a Laboratory expansion that adds genetic experimentation to breed custom fish species. The criticisms are real, though. The shop management phase has a habit of going on autopilot: sales can feel automated to the point where your active involvement shrinks right when you expect it to grow. Some reviewers noted that building aquarium after aquarium without enough variety in the feedback loop gets repetitive around the mid-game. The NPC character models are rough, and the story framing that opens the game is thin and overstays its welcome as a tutorial device. None of these issues are deal-breakers, but they do mean the game works best in medium-length sessions rather than marathon runs. On PC specifically, this is the format to play it on. The first-person controls feel built for mouse and keyboard, the customisation options (including the ability to use your own photo as a tank background) land better on a larger screen, and the Steam reviews sitting at 84% positive across over a thousand players suggests the community has broadly landed in the same camp. If your taste runs toward cosy management sims - think PowerWash Simulator's satisfying task completion crossed with a light business builder - Aquarist delivers that vibe with an unusually specific and charming subject matter. Best for cosy sim fans who want a hands-on aquarium career game with genuine ecological tinkering, not just a decoration toy.
