Viy: Retold Story
A point-and-click adventure based on Gogol's 'Vij' that trades horror atmosphere for narrative experimentation, landing somewhere between literary adaptation and experimental IF.
GamerScout Verdict
Niche literary experiment best suited to readers willing to trade gameplay for narrative ambition.

About Viy: Retold Story
I went in expecting Gothic horror (Gogol's original story is genuinely creepy) and found instead a text-heavy quest game more interested in philosophical tangents than scares. The premise hooks you: investigate a priest's supernatural encounter through interviews and exploration. But execution leans heavily on dialogue trees and reading, the kind of adventure where combat is absent and puzzles are mostly conversation-driven. It's spare, deliberate, and occasionally clever, but the pacing drags when you're waiting for story beats to connect. This works best if you're chasing faithful literary SF/F adaptations or experimental narrative design. It's not a conventional adventure game, and it definitely isn't horror despite the source material. The sub-5-hour runtime means it won't waste your time, but it also won't grab you if you need moment-to-moment gameplay hooks. Niche curiosity, not a crowd-pleaser.
