The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion GOTY Deluxe Edition

I've revisited Oblivion enough times to know what it does brilliantly and what hasn't aged well. The world design and quest variety still hold up, Morrowind fans will argue, but Oblivion nailed the balance between guided storytelling and genuine freedom. You can ignore the main plot entirely and spend 100 hours collecting cheese wheels or joining the Dark Brotherhood. The problem is execution: combat feels floaty, NPCs deliver lines with wooden delivery, and the level scaling system undermines difficulty in ways that frustrated me for hours before I learned to work around it. Character creation is granular but arcane. The Shivering Isles expansion is genuinely excellent and worth the detour. This GOTY Deluxe edition bundles the base game with extra content, making it the definitive version if you're willing to accept a 2006 game on its own terms. Modding community keeps it alive, but vanilla Oblivion rewards patience more than immediate gratification. Pick this up if immersive RPG worlds matter more to you than responsive controls, or if you're historically curious about where The Elder Scrolls peak before Skyrim streamlined everything.
