Super Robot Wars 30 is a turn-based tactical RPG developed by B.B. Studio and published by Bandai Namco, released in October 2021. It is the franchise's most accessible official Western release to date, and it pulls together an enormous cast of mecha anime properties, from Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam and Code Geass: Lelouch of the Re;surrection to Mazinger Z: Infinity and the Netflix ULTRAMAN adaptation, all fighting under one original crossover story. The core loop will feel instantly familiar to anyone who has played Fire Emblem or similar grid-based tactics games. You move units across isometric maps, clash with enemies in flashy animated combat sequences, then cycle through an Intermission phase where you spend credits, Pilot Points, and MxP to train pilots, slot in Enhancement Parts like the Sniper Kit S or Mega Booster, and outfit your mechs with Skill Programs such as SP Regen or Dash. What separates SRW30 from generic tactics fare is how distinct every unit feels. Some run on ammo-based weapons, others burn through energy reserves. Some fly freely, some excel underwater, some repair adjacent allies mid-battle. Figuring out the right formation for your favorite robots is genuinely satisfying, especially once the DLC units from Super Robot Wars OG expand your roster options further. The biggest structural departure from previous entries is the freeform mission map. Rather than a linear branching route, you pick from available Area Missions across the solar system, choosing your own order of operations. It makes replays feel meaningfully different and gives the Ultimate Edition's additional 26 Area Missions from both DLC packs real weight, since they slot naturally into that open structure rather than feeling tacked on. The 15 Side Missions in the Bonus Mission Pack add extra Enhancement Part farming opportunities on top. On Steam, the game sits at 94 percent positive across over fifteen hundred user reviews, which tells you the existing fanbase is very happy. That said, this is not the game to hand to someone who wants a punishing tactics experience. Critics noted that the difficulty leans toward fanservice over strategic depth, and the game provides minimal guidance on how to spend your upgrade resources early on. The menus can be fussy, particularly when navigating the map with a controller, and newcomers without familiarity with the anime properties will get the least out of the story. The good news is that difficulty can be adjusted freely from the Intermission screen, and the game does provide in-game series summaries to help orient the uninitiated. The Ultimate Edition specifically adds the Season Pass content plus the Premium Sound and Data Pack, which bundles 31 anime themes, 15 original songs, and bonus reference art. If you are going to spend time with this game, having the full roster and the extra missions from the start is the right call. This is a package aimed squarely at mecha enthusiasts and tactics fans who do not mind a steep but rewarding onboarding curve.
