About Space Empires I
Space Empires I is old-school 4X gaming stripped down to its skeleton. You manage colonies, research tech trees, and wage turn-based space warfare across a procedurally generated or custom galaxy, all through text menus and simple graphics that look like they crawled out of 1980s mainframes. There's no tutorial, minimal guidance, and the UI assumes you already know what "influence radius" means. If you love the idea of building an empire through pure spreadsheet logic and don't mind deciphering systems through trial and error, there's something compelling here. The trade-off is rough: no hand-holding, no modern quality-of-life features, and no way to know if you're playing optimally until you've sunk hours in. This is a niche pick for retro 4X fans who value depth over presentation, or anyone curious about what space empire games looked like before they became accessible. It's not unplayable, but it's not welcoming either. Go in knowing you're solving the game as much as playing it.
