About Senren * Banka
I went in expecting polished but formulaic, and Senren * Banka made me rethink that assumption within the first hour. Yuzusoft built this one as their tenth-anniversary title, and the craftsmanship shows in almost every scene. The setup sounds like a running gag: protagonist Masaomi visits a mountain village, accidentally snaps a legendary sword in half, and is promptly told he must marry the shrine maiden to make amends. What follows is far more considered than that premise implies. The common route is where the game genuinely earns its reputation. Hoori itself - a rural town so isolated that buses only run during daylight hours - is drawn with real atmosphere: old-Japan customs rubbing up against hot-spring tourism, spirits lurking at the edges of ordinary life, and a tight cast of characters who are introduced economically but layered carefully. The route-branching system also includes a visible story-map that lets you see decision branches and jump to different points to unlock alternative paths, which is a sensible quality-of-life touch for a VN of this length. Reviewer consensus clocks a full playthrough at roughly 40 hours across all routes. The four main routes cover Yoshino the serious shrine maiden, Mako, Lena, and the spirit Murasame herself - the soul who had been inhabiting the broken sword. Each route reveals character depth that the common route deliberately withholds, which keeps re-reads interesting rather than repetitive. That said, critics and players alike flag the individual routes as a step down from the common route in plotting; some threads opened in Murasame's arc get quietly dropped rather than resolved, and a couple of conclusions feel rushed after strong build-up. The romance writing compensates through character warmth more than narrative ambition. Production quality is hard to fault. The art from Kobuchi, Muririn, and Senji is consistently excellent, character expressions are varied and well-deployed, and the full Japanese voice cast (reprising roles for the anime adaptation announced for 2027) carries emotional scenes without overcooking them. The NekoNyan localization is clean and readable. The Steam version ships with English, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, and Japanese text options, and the all-ages content on Steam is the default; an adult patch exists separately for players who want it. Who is this for? VN readers who appreciate a slow-burn supernatural setting over pure romance-sim structure will get the most out of it. If you bounced off Sabbat of the Witch or Riddle Joker, Senren * Banka is unlikely to change your mind on the genre. But if you already know you like Yuzusoft's approach, this is widely considered one of their strongest works, and the upcoming anime means the fandom around it is only growing.
