RPG Maker VX Ace is a visual game engine, not a game you play. I went in thinking I'd prototype something in an afternoon and discovered the actual skill floor is steeper than the marketing suggests. The editor is genuinely flexible, multiple tilesets, robust event scripting, full control over shadows and lighting, but the UI feels dated even by 2012 standards, and the default assets are... functional, not inspiring. You'll spend half your time hunting community resources or purchasing DLC packs to avoid that "I made this in an engine" look. It's the right tool if you're serious about making a top-down JRPG and willing to invest weeks in learning the quirks. The Workshop integration means you can browse thousands of fan scripts and tilesets, which softens the pain. But if you want to ship something quick, expect friction. Best for aspiring game devs who are patient, not for casual creators hoping to iterate fast.
