RPG Maker XP
A game dev toolkit from 2013 that lets you build JRPGs without coding skills, but XP's scripting layer and dated engine mean it's mostly for hobbyists and nostalgia seekers.
GamerScout Verdict
A dated but functional JRPG engine best for hobbyists chasing early-2010s nostalgia, not newcomers to game dev.

About RPG Maker XP
RPG Maker XP is the third iteration in the long-running JRPG construction series, designed to let anyone build a playable RPG without programming knowledge. The core appeal is the visual event editor and pre-built battle system, plus a Ruby-based scripting layer for users who want to modify the engine's fundamentals. You get asset libraries, tileset editors, and basic database tools to wire up story, characters, and progression. The catch: XP is over a decade old. Successor versions (VX Ace, MV, MZ) have vastly improved the interface, expanded asset packs, and modernized the scripting. If you're shopping for RPG Maker right now, XP is a relic. It's worth considering only if you're chasing that early-2010s aesthetic, want to tinker with an older codebase for learning, or dig into the existing XP community mods. For new projects, the newer engines are faster to learn and ship from.
