Rising Storm Game of the Year Edition
Closer to a Vietnam War sim than a shooter, RS2 rewards squads who communicate and punishes solos who think they can CoD their way through a 64-player firefight.
GamerScout Verdict
Best for tactical FPS players who want asymmetric faction design and real command structure, not a casual shooter substitute.

About Rising Storm Game of the Year Edition
I've spent enough time in tactical shooters to spot the ones that actually care about decision-making, and Rising Storm 2: Vietnam GOTY Edition sits in a category very few games occupy. It lands squarely between arcade run-and-gun and full-blown mil-sim, which means it will frustrate players who drift too far toward either end of that spectrum. The good news is that nailing the middle ground is exactly what Antimatter Games and Tripwire Interactive built this for. The core loop is 64-player asymmetrical PvP across Territories, Supremacy, and Skirmish modes. Territory (the campaign mode) dominates the server browser and for good reason: it chains map objectives into a flowing campaign sequence that rewards tactical momentum. Each team has a Commander who coordinates helicopter landing zones, calls in artillery through radiomen, and issues orders over voice chat. Miss that command layer and you are just a grunt bleeding out in a rice paddy with no idea why your team is losing. Lean into it, and you get something that few multiplayer shooters offer: a genuine sense that decisions made at the top actually change outcomes at the bottom. The asymmetry between factions is where the strategic depth really opens up. US Army, Marines, Australians, and ARVN forces bring heavier firepower and helicopter mobility, including four flyable helicopter classes that change how your team gets around the map entirely. PAVN, NVA, and NLF/VC factions fight back with tunnels, mines, booby traps, and ambush-first tactics that make every jungle approach feel genuinely dangerous. The weapon handling across 50-plus period-correct guns has meaningful recoil profiles: full-auto at range is a liability, semi-auto demands discipline, and the short time-to-kill keeps every engagement tense. Class slots are limited and first-come-first-served at match start, so logging in late often means playing basic rifleman whether you want to or not. The honest criticisms are real. Visuals were dated at launch and have not aged into anything charming. The tutorial does the bare minimum, which is a problem when the game's first few hours involve dying repeatedly without understanding why. The community has a reputation for being unforgiving toward newcomers, though most active servers trend toward helpful once you signal that you are trying to contribute. The mod ecosystem via Steam Workshop has extended the game's life meaningfully, with community-made maps winning developer-sponsored contests and adding variety well beyond the stock map pool. For a game this old, that ongoing community investment matters. For anyone asking whether this holds up as a purchase in 2026: if you want a solo-friendly casual shooter, look elsewhere. If you want a multiplayer tactical experience where the Commander role, squad coordination, and asymmetric faction design actually create outcomes that feel earned rather than random, Rising Storm 2 GOTY remains one of the few Vietnam-era games that delivers on that premise.
