I came into this one half-expecting a competent but formulaic LEGO game, and instead found what might be the strongest argument for why TT Games' formula works best when the licence is built on magic. The spell-wheel mechanic changes everything. Rather than giving each character two static abilities and calling it a day, the game has you attending Hogwarts classes to learn spells that permanently join your arsenal. By the time Year 4 rolls around, you are swapping between Wingardium Leviosa, Reducto, Immobulus, and Riddikulus on the fly to crack puzzles, and the variety that creates is genuinely surprising for a game aimed at kids and families. The structure across the 24 chapters is split into six stages per year, covering Philosopher's Stone through Goblet of Fire. Combat is largely sidelined in favour of environmental puzzle-solving, which suits the source material far better than punching everything would. Each major character brings something distinct: Ron deploys Scabbers through narrow pipes to hit hidden switches, Hermione deciphers special bookcases and uses her Time Turner ability via grandfather clocks, Harry slips past guards under his invisibility cloak, and Hagrid is simply enormous in the most useful way. The Polyjuice Potion adds a clever disguise mechanic on top, letting you temporarily transform into any unlocked minifig to access restricted areas. Hogwarts itself serves as a living, evolving hub rather than a static menu screen, and Nearly Headless Nick trails ghostly studs to guide you toward the next story beat if you want direction, or you can ignore him entirely and poke around for Gold Bricks, Red Bricks, and the 167 character tokens scattered everywhere. For completionists, the 100% checklist is substantial. You're hunting True Wizard status on every level, rescuing Students in Peril, assembling House Crests, and farming stud multiplier Red Bricks in Diagon Alley to make the grind bearable. The game is honest about demanding multiple playthroughs of each level, since certain spells learned late in Year 4 unlock secrets gated behind silver locks, dark-magic objects, and Reducto-only chests you walked past in Year 1. That loop of returning with a bigger toolkit is the core hook, and it holds up. On the rougher side, spell aiming can be imprecise when enemies crowd the screen, and the boss fights all follow the same three-hit formula, which feels thin by Year 4. The PC port from 2010 has its quirks, including the occasional bug, and the split-screen co-op (local only) can get cramped in tighter corridors. The humour throughout is wordless pantomime, which lands more often than not, but some story beats from the films lose nuance in the plastic retelling. None of this is a dealbreaker. The game knows what it is: accessible, whimsical, and loaded with incidental detail that rewards players who just want to poke every corner of Hogwarts with a wand. This one fits well for Potter fans of any age, for parents looking for something genuinely playable alongside younger kids in local co-op, and for anyone who bounced off the franchise's later more combat-heavy LEGO entries. It is not technically demanding, it is not narratively complex, but the spell-driven puzzle design and the sheer warmth of the licence give it staying power that a lot of similar games from the same era lack.
