97% positive across 23,000+ reviews after a decade in Early Access, and H3VR's 1.0 launch is the rare case where a game fully earns its reputation. PC VR owners, this is the firearms sandbox everything else is measured against.

I've tracked a lot of simulation games reach 1.0, but few carry the weight H3VR does arriving at full release. Ten years of Early Access, 120-plus updates, and a solo developer who kept shipping when most studios would have quietly abandoned the project. What you get at the finish line is not a polished-up tech demo. It is the most mechanically thorough firearms sandbox in VR, and it is not particularly close. The core loop is deceptively simple: spawn a gun, learn how it works, then find something to shoot at. But the depth hiding under that premise is where H3VR separates itself from every other VR shooter. Every firearm, across a roster now exceeding 600 weapons and 250 attachments, demands physical interaction. You rack slides, seat magazines, manage safeties, and chamber rounds by hand. There is no button-press abstraction. A bolt-action rifle feels like a bolt-action rifle. A revolver requires you to load individual rounds. The simulation fidelity here is what gun-range games on flat screens have been trying to approximate for years, and H3VR makes it feel natural inside VR. The M.E.A.T.S. target trainer sharpens reaction time with global leaderboard tracking, the firing and demolitions ranges let you stress-test loadouts, and the Breaching Proto mode puts you inside a house-clearing scenario that forces real decision-making about weapon selection at close and medium range. The mode that has held the community together for years, though, is Take and Hold: a procedurally generated combat challenge that forces you to cycle through different firearms as you hold capture zones against escalating enemies. It exploits the full arsenal instead of letting you camp with one favourite, and it is the reason players log hundreds of hours rather than dozens. Enemy AI takes the form of anthropomorphic hot dogs, which is either charming or deeply strange depending on your tolerance for absurdist humour, but the combat itself is not a joke. The AI is aggressive, the ammo management is real, and the room-scale 360-degree design means threats come from directions you are not watching. For newcomers worried about being thrown into the deep end, a Sampler Platter tutorial map covers the basics across weapon types, and the options panel offers enough accessibility toggles (virtual stock, easy mag loading, adjustable locomotion speed, variable gravity) that the entry barrier is lower than the game's reputation suggests. The modding situation is also worth flagging. Full release brought Steam Workshop support, and the community has been adding content for years through third-party tools. The mod ecosystem extends an already enormous game considerably further. Where H3VR shows its age is in structural navigation. Jumping between scenes and modes is not as clean as a purpose-built menu would be, and players who want a cinematic campaign or a clear progression ladder will not find one here. This is a sandbox that rewards self-direction. If you need the game to tell you what to do next, you will bounce off it. If you can set your own goals, rack a fresh weapon, and decide to spend an hour learning its quirks, H3VR will pay that time back without a ceiling in sight. Diego, Scout Team
