Frostpunk + The Rifts

I've spent enough time in Paradox games to know when a strategy title has real teeth, and Frostpunk delivers on the premise: you're managing a desperate city under an eternal winter, and every decision cascades into either stability or chaos. The core loop is tight, balancing heat, food, hope, and discontent while researching your way out of apocalypse. Laws you pass stick around and change how your society functions; there's no save-scum diplomacy here, just consequences. The Rifts expansion adds new maps and mechanical depth, though base Frostpunk alone offers 30-50 hours of distinct scenarios with sharply different win conditions. What works: the moral weight of hard choices, AI that responds to your laws, and a mod scene that extends replayability. What doesn't: once you've solved a map's economy, subsequent runs feel formulaic. Tutorial is adequate but assumes you're comfortable with spreadsheet-heavy play. This is a strategy game for people who want their city-builders to hurt, not a cozy sandbox. If you want to optimize resource chains and roleplay an increasingly authoritarian regime, Frostpunk respects that ambition.
