If Satisfactory felt too punishing and Factorio too flat, Foundry sits in a chill middle ground - though that same comfort might be its ceiling for veteran factory builders.

I came into Foundry expecting the genre chaos of Factorio crammed into a voxel sandbox, and what I got was something considerably gentler - a first-person factory builder developed by Channel 3 Entertainment and published by Paradox Interactive, which hit Steam Early Access in May 2024. You play as a worker stranded on a procedurally generated alien planet, guided by an AI called Carl, tasked with mining raw materials, wiring up production chains, laying conveyor belts and pipes, managing power grids, and eventually automating the whole operation into a self-sustaining robotics megafactory. The voxel world is the game's clearest selling point: unlike most factory games locked to a flat surface, Foundry lets you dig underground, build across mountain ridges, or stack machinery skyward. Every block is destructible and replaceable, so the terrain bends to your factory plan rather than the other way around. For players who bounced off Satisfactory's power grid crises or Factorio's hostile biters, Foundry is a genuinely inviting entry point. The controls are snappy and responsive, the early-game loop of hand-crafting your first machines before graduating to full automation is well-paced, and the colorful voxel aesthetic has a personality that the genre's grittier entries often skip. Co-op works over internet or LAN with no hard player cap (though the developers suggest two to four as the sweet spot), and the shared factory-building sessions are where the game clearly shines brightest. The criticism that follows the game everywhere is fair, though: Foundry is almost too accommodating. There is no environmental hostility, no creature attacks, no real logistical pressure until you voluntarily scale up. The world is visually pretty but static - nothing pushes back. Players who want the friction of a power overload forcing an emergency coal plant rebuild will find that Foundry mostly lets you off the hook. The UI has drawn consistent complaints for being clunky in places, and the mid-to-late game production chains can tip into grind without the escalating tension that keeps factory games addictive for hundreds of hours. Power management in particular feels underdeveloped compared to genre peers. Channel 3 Entertainment has been active with updates since launch, adding trading mechanics, a galactic market, an R and D lab, lava caves, and a star map across its post-release roadmap. The roadmap signals real ambition, and the community feedback loop appears to be working. As an Early Access title it carries the usual asterisk: some systems still feel rough around the edges, and the full-version release window has not been announced. If you can accept buying into a game that is still growing, the foundation is genuinely solid - especially on Steam Deck, where the accessible controls translate well to handheld play. Bottom line: Foundry is the factory game for builders who want a sandbox canvas more than a survival puzzle. It does the relaxed, creative side of automation better than almost anything in the genre right now. It does the tense, optimisation-under-pressure side worse than its direct competitors. Know which player you are before you buy. Alex, Scout Team
