Parkour so good it makes fast-travel feel wasteful, wrapped in a zombie open world that gets a lot right and a few things very wrong. Worth knowing which is which before you buy.

I've spent enough time on Villedor's rooftops to say with confidence that the traversal system here is the single best reason to play Dying Light 2 Stay Human. From the moment you unlock the paraglider and grappling hook, the city stops being a map and starts being a playground. Swinging across wide gaps, gliding between towers, chaining wall-runs without touching the ground for entire city blocks - that loop alone carries a huge chunk of the runtime, and it genuinely does not get old. The first game had good parkour. This one makes the first game look cautious. The setting is Villedor, a dense European city that survived the viral collapse and became the last major human settlement. You play as Aiden Caldwell, a Pilgrim - essentially a freelance courier with a troubled past - who arrives looking for his sister and ends up tangled in factional politics between rival survivor groups competing for control of the city's resources. The day-night cycle matters here in a mechanical way: daytime keeps the worst infected docile and manageable, but after dark the streets belong to far more dangerous creatures and Aiden's own infection timer starts counting down, forcing you to sprint for UV light sources or burn a booster to stay human. Early on this creates real tension. It softens as you upgrade your character, but the pressure never fully disappears. Faction choices carry genuine consequences. Assigning control of windmills, water towers, and safe houses to either the Peacekeepers or the Survivors reshapes what you find in the city - different gear, different environmental tools, different NPC dynamics. It is not the sprawling narrative simulation that the pre-launch marketing suggested, but the choices land solidly enough that replays carry a different feel. Side quests range from forgettable fetch runs to compact moral stories with actual thought behind them, and the writing on the better ones punches above the game's average. Where things unravel is in the combat. First-person melee works fine at the start - bats, pipes, machetes, modified weapons with elemental mods all hit with decent feedback. The problem is that combat depth does not keep pace with traversal depth. Enemy variety is thin, and cranking the difficulty mostly just inflates enemy health rather than adding smarter encounters. The world also suffers from repetitive structure: climb enough buildings and you notice the same layouts cycling back. The story starts slow, spends a long time front-loading exposition, and the narrative payoff in the second half is uneven. None of this breaks the game, but players expecting a tight action-RPG will notice the gaps. For co-op players, the online drop-in system lets a friend join your session for most of the campaign, and the game plays noticeably better with a partner - both the combat jank and the pacing issues matter less when you are racing someone across rooftops. Post-launch patches have addressed some of the rougher technical edges from release, so the version available now is a meaningfully improved experience versus what critics originally reviewed. If your priority is an open world that rewards pure movement, Dying Light 2 Stay Human has very few competitors on PC. If you need the story and combat to match, temper expectations. Best for open-world fans who prioritise fluid traversal above all else and can forgive combat that never quite matches the movement system.
