About Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls
Reaper of Souls is the expansion that turned Diablo 3 from an embarrassment into something the series could be proud of. If you bounced off the original after launch, the grievances you had - a loot system built around the now-dead Auction House, limp endgame, and difficulty that felt either insulting or irrelevant - were heard. What this expansion delivers is not a reinvention, but a focused, confident course correction that gives the whole package the spine it always needed. The most immediately playable addition is Adventure Mode, unlocked after you defeat the expansion's villain Malthael. It strips away campaign structure entirely and replaces it with five bounties per act spanning all of Diablo 3's regions - kill targets, dungeon clears, timed events - plus Nephalem Rifts, which are randomised dungeons with randomised tile sets, monster pools, and bosses. Rifts are the engine that will eat your hours. The loop of clearing a Rift in 10-20 minutes, cashing in your Rift Keystone, and chasing legendary drops is exactly the kind of compulsive endgame the base game was crying out for. The level cap goes to 70, Paragon levels become account-wide (so every alt benefits from your grinding), and the Loot 2.0 system means legendary items are rare enough to matter but common enough that you will actually see them drop. The new class is the Crusader, a heavily armoured holy warrior descended spiritually from the Paladin of Diablo 2. You can wield the heaviest two-handed weapons in one hand, which leaves room for a shield, and the skill set mixes melee aggression with divine utility. Shield Bash with the Shattered Shield rune delivers a satisfying cone of damage. Blessed Hammer still feels like Blessed Hammer. Condemn with the Vacuum rune - which pulls nearby enemies toward you before detonating them - is the kind of build experiment that makes the skill-and-rune system genuinely worth tinkering with past hour 40. The rune system as a whole is one of Diablo 3's underrated strengths: each of the six skill slots can be modded in ways that change playstyle meaningfully, not just numerically. Act V itself, set in the grim city of Westmarch and the eerie Pandemonium Fortress, is the strongest campaign chapter in the entire game. Malthael as a villain is visually striking - a fallen Angel of Death who is draining humanity to fuel his undead armies - though critics fairly noted he is absent for most of the act, appearing mainly as a final-act reveal. The writing doesn't hold up to the worldbuilding's atmosphere. The story tells you where to go; it doesn't really bother explaining why you should care. If you came to Diablo 3 hoping for Planescape-level moral weight, you came to the wrong dungeon. What the act does deliver is dense, dark environments, tougher enemy swarms than previous acts, and some memorable set pieces including riding a battering ram into Pandemonium. On the flip side, the always-online requirement remains a friction point - lag spikes during bounties are a known irritant and there is no offline fallback. For lapsed Diablo players, this is the re-entry point that makes sense. For newcomers, picking up the base game plus this expansion is the recommended way to experience Diablo 3 in its most complete state. The co-op works, the build variety holds, and the combination of bounties, Rifts, and Paragon progression gives you enough running room to stay busy well beyond the campaign credits.
