Motive rebuilt the 2008 horror classic from the ground up, and the result is one of the sharpest survival-horror remakes in recent memory. If you have never set foot on the Ishimura, now is the time.

I went in half-expecting a competent cash-in, and walked out with cold hands and a near-complete weapons upgrade tree. Motive had a genuinely difficult job here: the 2008 original is not some forgotten relic that needed saving. It was already good. The question was never whether Dead Space needed a remake; it was whether this team had the craft to justify one. They do. The core loop is intact and remains one of the most distinctive in horror gaming. You are Isaac Clarke, an engineer stuck aboard the USG Ishimura, a planet-cracking ship overrun with Necromorphs. Killing these things requires strategic dismemberment. Shoot a limb off. Then another. Stomp the corpse for extra drops. The Plasma Cutter is still your best friend, but the Flamethrower, Force Gun, and Ripper all have viable upgrade paths through the workbench's node system, which rewards investment without punishing experimentation. The zero-gravity movement has been freed from its original preset-path restrictions, meaning those sections now feel like actual free-form traversal. Small change on paper, significant improvement in practice. What Motive added on top of the foundation is thoughtful rather than bloated. Isaac now speaks, which makes the story land harder than the silent-protagonist version did. A security clearance system, earned progressively through the main path, unlocks previously gated rooms across the Ishimura and keeps backtracking purposeful. Optional side quests add character context without becoming mandatory homework. The one honest criticism is that the side content is fairly short and lightly developed. Players hoping for substantial new story material beyond the main arc will find the additions feel more like welcome bonus detail than a genuine expansion. The Ishimura's corridors can also feel repetitive to players without a tolerance for slow, corridor-based tension. This is not an open-world action game. If that loop bores you in the first two hours, no amount of upgrade nodes will fix it. The audio and visual overhaul on PC is the clearest argument for the remake's existence. Volumetric fog, reactive lighting, and the new Peeling system, where Necromorph flesh degrades layer by layer under fire, make every encounter more viscerally readable and more unsettling at the same time. The 3D atmospheric audio deserves specific mention. Playing with headphones is genuinely uncomfortable in the best way. The Frostbite engine was an unusual choice for a horror game, but Motive got exceptional mileage out of it. If you played the 2008 version obsessively, the remake still has surprises: remixed set pieces, altered character beats, and a late-game stretch that diverges just enough to keep veterans off-balance. If you are arriving fresh, you are getting the cleanest possible version of one of survival horror's most mechanically inventive entries. Either way, the Ishimura is worth boarding. Alex, Scout Team
