Code Shifter

I went in expecting a celebration of Arc System Works' fighting game legacy. Instead, Code Shifter is a side-scrolling beat-em-up where you play as chibi versions of Guilty Gear and BlazBlue characters in levels that feel more like padding than passion projects. The pixel art is charming, and local co-op works fine for casual button-mashing, but the combat is simplistic and the level design doesn't evolve much across the campaign. The real problem: this game exists because of licensing, not because there's a compelling reason to make it. If you're buying this purely for the character cameos, you'll be disappointed by how little personality they bring to the brawler formula. It's playable, sure, but even fans of the original franchises will find better action elsewhere.
