GamerScout Verdict
For hardened Castlevania fans and retro purists only. Modern players should expect 80s-level patience requirements.

About Castlevania - Anniversary Collection
I went in expecting a straightforward emulation package, and that's mostly what this is. The Anniversary Collection bundles several canonical Castlevania games across NES, SNES, and arcade hardware, spanning the original 1987 platformer through to later entries. If you've never played these, you're getting the raw blueprint for what made the series iconic: tight whip-based combat, gothic atmosphere, and level design that respects pattern recognition over hand-holding. The catch is that these games are genuinely hard by modern standards, and the collection offers minimal modernization. No rebalancing, no quality-of-life toggles, no difficulty presets beyond what the originals shipped with. You're either committed to understanding why Castlevania mattered, or you'll bounce off within an hour. The emulation itself is solid, and for series archaeologists this is the easiest way to play these versions on PC. Just know you're not getting a remaster or a tribute game, you're getting preservation, which is its own kind of value.
