The combat is the reason anyone remembers this game, and it still earns that reputation. The Brave and Default system is built around Brave Points (BP): you can Default to defend and bank BP for future turns, or Brave to spend multiple turns at once, acting up to four times in a single round. Burn too many BP and your characters go into negative territory, sitting out while enemies have free rein. That risk-reward loop gives every fight a poker-game tension that most turn-based RPGs never bother to engineer. Layered on top is a job system with 24 distinct classes, each leveled independently up to rank 14, unlocking job-specific commands and passive abilities along the way. Mixing and matching jobs is where the real depth lives, and where many hours quietly disappear. The remaster also carries over quality-of-life options from the original's "For the Sequel" re-release: adjustable encounter rates, battle speed toggles, and auto-battle options that let you dial the grind up or down to taste. The story follows four heroes - the earnest Tiz, the sincere vestal Agnes, the noble turncoat Edea, and the womanizing amnesiac Ringabel - on a crystal-restoration quest that wears its Final Fantasy influences openly. The broad plot beats are familiar, but the script's smaller character moments and the villain roster's surprising depth make the journey worthwhile. Critics have flagged the pacing in the mid-to-late game as a recurring complaint carried over from the original, and that is a fair warning: the structure asks a lot of patience before it pays out. Two new minigames, Luxencheer Rhythm Catch and Ringabel's Panic Cruise, are included but feel more like curiosities than content; don't buy this expecting bonus campaign material. On PC specifically, the remaster runs at 60 fps, the UI has been rebuilt for single-screen play, and the networking features that powered the original's social city-building (shut down in 2023) have been retooled for modern infrastructure. Steam user reviews sit at 91% positive across nearly 750 reviews, which is a healthy signal for a port landing this late after the console debut. The visual upgrade is uneven - major characters benefit noticeably, background merchants and secondary models less so - but nothing breaks immersion badly enough to matter during the hours you spend in menus planning job combinations. If you missed this on 3DS, or if the handheld hardware cost kept you away at the time, the PC release is the most accessible entry point yet into a JRPG that quietly influenced everything from Octopath Traveler to the broader HD-2D trend at Square Enix. Veterans who already sank 60-plus hours into the original will find the additions thin, but newcomers get the definitive version of a genuinely clever game.
