GamerScout Verdict
Worth it for incremental fans who want a tight, build-aware loop, just don't expect more than a few satisfying hours of content.

About Bills Must Be Paid
I went in expecting a throwaway clicker and came out having genuinely debated whether to prioritize grip strength or caffeine addiction first. That tension is the whole point of Bills Must Be Paid. The stamina cap is the design move that separates this from every idle clicker in its genre: each run ends the moment your hand tires out, which means every swing carries a micro-decision. Hit one more piggy or bank what you have? Spend on endurance now or gamble on a bigger haul and buy speed later? That tug-of-war keeps the loop feeling active rather than passive. The skill tree has real teeth. You are choosing between grip strength, wrist upgrades, caffeine dependency, a luck path that fishes for rare coins, and active abilities like rock rain or an electrified hammer. Hammers themselves come in distinct archetypes: high crit chance with a tight radius for burst income, or wide and fast for volume clearing. Matching your hammer to your current skill-tree path is the kind of build decision that incrementals rarely bother with at this scale. On top of that, piggies are not a uniform resource. Some sprint away, some sit still and absorb hits, and a few carry disproportionate payouts worth chasing across the arena. Knowing which ones to prioritize is a learnable, rewarding skill. The bill mechanic is where the strategy hat actually goes on. Bills arrive on a timer, and ignoring them lets the debt collector skim a percentage off every coin you earn, which compounds badly late in a run. Paying a bill off unlocks a perk, so there is a real incentive to clear debt proactively rather than hoarding cash for upgrades. The meta layer adds prestige-style progression: bankruptcy earns legacy points you spend on rings and bracelets that permanently buff your hand going into the next cycle. It is a clean roguelite loop dressed in incremental clothing, and it works. Here is the honest caveat: this game is short. Steam players have flagged completing the full run including all achievements in under three hours, and a softlock on the "Maxed Out" achievement (entering the final boss before completing the skill tree) has forced at least some players into a full replay. Rike Games has been responsive to community feedback since launch, but achievement hunters should plan their skill tree purchases before fighting the final boss. If your tolerance for incremental games is measured in hundreds of hours, this is a lunch-break game, not a campaign. For what it is, the polish is hard to argue with. A two-person studio shipping a first premium Steam release that lands at overwhelmingly positive reception on launch day is not nothing. The moment-to-moment feel of smashing, the loot randomness, and the bill pressure create a genuinely satisfying loop that respects your time without disrespecting your intelligence. Beginners get an intuitive premise and immediate feedback. Optimizers get build variety, stamina math, and a meta layer to sink into between runs. Both groups finish in the same afternoon, which is either the pitch or the dealbreaker depending on what you came for.
