About Away: Journey to the Unexpected
I spent a couple hours with Away and felt genuinely charmed by what Aurelien Regard Games built solo (alongside a collaborator). This is a short, deliberately paced adventure that pairs colorful pixel art with a soundtrack that sits in your head. You play through a world of bizarre characters who become your allies, each one adding a mechanic or ability tied to friendship rather than traditional loot. The rogue-lite structure means runs vary, but the game never outstays its welcome. What works: the hand-drawn personality, the willingness to be slow and atmospheric when it matters, the way combat integrates character depth. What's lighter: the difficulty curve feels forgiving, and some players hunting for complex systems might find it shallow. But that's not the point. Away is a 4-to-6-hour warmth, not a grind.
