Alone in the Dark

I picked up Alone in the Dark expecting dated controls and janky camera work, and I wasn't wrong. This is the game that basically invented the third-person survival horror template, and it shows its age in almost every interaction. You're investigating a mansion full of creatures, shuffling between fixed camera angles, managing inventory, and rationing ammunition like your life depends on it. The puzzle design is obtuse by modern standards, but there's something oddly compelling about the deliberate pacing and genuine sense of dread when you turn a corner and don't know what's waiting. It's rough, unforgiving, and absolutely not for everyone. But if you're a horror history buff or someone who wants to see where this whole subgenre came from before jump scares became the default, it's worth a few hours of squinting at the screen and fighting the controls.
