Windows Server 2016 Essentials is a perpetual-licence server operating system published by Microsoft. It is part of the Windows Server 2016 family, which reached general availability in October 2016 and is built on the same kernel as Windows 10. The Essentials tier sits at the entry level of the product line and is designed specifically for small businesses that need a dedicated on-premises server without the complexity or cost of higher-tier editions. Mainstream support for the 2016 generation ended in January 2022; extended security updates run until January 2027, so this is a mature product approaching end-of-extended-support.

However, be clear-eyed about the limitations: the 25-user hard cap means outgrowing it triggers a full licence replacement, extended support expires in early 2027, and Windows Server 2022 (and 2025) are now available with longer support horizons. If you are setting up a server expected to run for five-plus years, evaluating the newer generation first is prudent. Essentials 2016 is a sensible choice for budget-conscious buyers with modest, stable requirements who want a proven, well-documented platform.
