What is Windows 8.1 Pro?

Windows 8.1 Pro is a desktop operating system released by Microsoft in October 2013. It was a free update to the original Windows 8, addressing widespread criticism of the tile-based interface and restoring several familiar desktop behaviours. The "Pro" edition sits above the base Home tier and is aimed at power users, small businesses, and IT professionals who need advanced management and security tools.

Microsoft ended mainstream support for Windows 8.1 in January 2018 and extended support on 10 January 2023, meaning the OS no longer receives security patches of any kind. This is the most important fact a buyer should weigh before purchasing.

What's included

Windows 8.1 Pro includes everything in the standard edition, plus a set of professional-grade additions:

• **BitLocker Drive Encryption** — full-disk encryption for protecting data at rest
• **Remote Desktop Host** — allows other machines to connect to this PC remotely (the base edition can only connect out, not receive incoming connections)
• **Domain Join** — connect the PC to a corporate Active Directory network
• **Group Policy Management** — apply IT policy settings locally or via domain
• **Hyper-V** — built-in virtualisation for running other operating systems inside Windows (requires compatible 64-bit hardware with SLAT support and virtualisation enabled in firmware)
• **Windows Media Center add-on** eligibility — available as a paid add-on during the product's active life (briefly offered free during a limited promotional window in 2012 for Windows 8; no longer distributed in either form)

The interface centres on a hybrid Start Screen/Desktop design. Windows 8.1 introduced an option to boot directly to the desktop (rather than the tile Start Screen), added a Start button (though it opens the tile screen, not a traditional menu), and improved multi-monitor support. The boot-to-desktop option became enabled by default for mouse-and-keyboard devices with the Windows 8.1 Update 1 release in April 2014.

Licence and activation

Keys sold on price-comparison marketplaces are almost always **OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer)** keys, occasionally retail (also called FPP — Full Packaged Product). The distinction matters:

• **OEM keys** are tied permanently to the first machine they activate on. They cannot be transferred to a new PC if you upgrade your hardware. They are cheaper for this reason.
• **Retail keys** can be deactivated and moved to a different machine, giving you flexibility across hardware changes.

Sellers do not always label this clearly, so check the product listing before purchasing. After buying, you will receive a 25-character product key by email. Activation is done through Windows Setup or the "Change product key" option in System Settings — no physical media is required if you download the ISO from Microsoft's official servers.

Is it worth it?

Windows 8.1 Pro is best suited to a narrow set of use cases: breathing life into older hardware that cannot run Windows 10 or 11 (due to TPM 2.0 requirements), licensing a secondary machine for a specific legacy application, or meeting the minimum OS requirements of niche enterprise software that has not been updated.

For most buyers, it is not the right choice. The OS has been out of all security support since January 2023, making it unsuitable for any internet-connected machine used for sensitive tasks. Note that as of October 2025, Microsoft has also ended support for Windows 10, so the only currently-supported consumer upgrade path is Windows 11 (which requires TPM 2.0 and compatible hardware).

If you are activating an air-gapped test machine, a retro-computing project, or a legacy specialist workstation, the low price of OEM keys can make this a practical option — provided you go in with realistic expectations about the lack of ongoing patches.
