What is Windows 10 Home N?

Windows 10 Home N is a specific edition of Microsoft's Windows 10 operating system, created for the European market. The "N" designation stands for "Not with Media Player" — it exists because the European Commission ruled that Microsoft must offer a version of Windows without bundled media-playback software. Functionally it is the same operating system as Windows 10 Home, running on the same kernel and receiving the same Windows Update cycle, but with certain media components stripped out at installation. It is a genuine Microsoft product, not a third-party modification.

What's included

Windows 10 Home N includes the full Windows 10 Home feature set minus the media-related components:

• Full Windows 10 Home experience: Start Menu, Microsoft Store, Windows Security, DirectX 12, and all core OS functionality
• Windows Hello biometric sign-in, BitLocker is NOT included (that's a Pro feature), and Snap layout multitasking
• Cortana, virtual desktops, and the Microsoft Edge browser are present
• **What is missing:** Windows Media Player, Groove Music, Movies & TV, Voice Recorder, and certain media-related codecs are not pre-installed

Microsoft offers a free "Media Feature Pack" add-on through Windows Update or the Microsoft Store that restores most of these components if you need them later. For most users who rely on third-party players (VLC, Spotify, etc.) the absence is barely noticeable day-to-day.

Licence & activation

Keys sold on price-comparison platforms are almost always OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) keys rather than full retail licences. This distinction matters:

• **OEM key:** Tied permanently to the first machine it is activated on. It cannot be transferred to a new PC if you upgrade your hardware. It is cheaper because of this restriction.
• **Retail key:** Transferable to a different machine if you deactivate it on the old one first. Retail keys cost more but offer flexibility.

Activation is straightforward: after installing Windows 10 (a free ISO is available directly from Microsoft), you enter the 25-character product key during setup or via Settings > Update & Security > Activation. Delivery from digital sellers is typically instant by email. No physical media or disc drive is required.

If you are buying a replacement key for a machine you already own, OEM is usually sufficient. If you build or replace PCs regularly, the extra cost of retail is worth considering.

Is it worth it?

**Important security notice:** Windows 10 reached its End of Life on October 14, 2025. As of that date, Microsoft no longer issues security updates for any Windows 10 edition, including Windows 10 Home N. Running an unsupported operating system means newly discovered vulnerabilities will not be patched, which carries a real security risk for internet-connected machines.

For hardware that cannot meet Windows 11's TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot requirements — which covers a significant portion of older PCs — the practical options are to continue using Windows 10 without security updates (accepting the associated risk), explore third-party workarounds to install Windows 11 on unsupported hardware (not officially supported by Microsoft), or consider a supported alternative operating system.

For EU shoppers on hardware that does meet Windows 11's requirements, Windows 11 Home is the better long-term choice. Windows 10 Home N keys may still be sold digitally and can activate a functional installation, but buyers should do so with a clear understanding that the OS no longer receives security patches.
