Sobre VMware vCenter Server 8 Foundation Key
What is VMware vCenter Server 8 Foundation?
VMware vCenter Server is the centralised management layer for VMware vSphere virtualisation environments. It lets administrators provision, monitor, and control virtual machines and ESXi hosts from a single console rather than managing each host individually. Version 8 is the current major release, developed originally by VMware and now owned by Broadcom following its 2023 acquisition.
The Foundation edition is the entry-level tier of vCenter Server, explicitly scoped to small environments. It is not a general-purpose management platform — it is purpose-built for organisations running a handful of ESXi hosts and wanting basic, centralised control without the overhead of a larger licence.
What's Included
Foundation gives you the core vCenter Server appliance with the HTML5-based vSphere Client, vCenter Single Sign-On (log in once, manage all connected hosts), inventory search, and host-level alarms and notifications.
The defining constraint of Foundation is a hard limit of three managed ESXi hosts. Once you reach that cap, no additional hosts can be added under the same licence.
Compared to vCenter Server Standard, Foundation omits several capabilities that matter at scale:
- No vCenter Server High Availability (HA) for the management layer itself
- No Enhanced Linked Mode (cannot link multiple vCenter instances for unified inventory)
- No built-in vRealize Orchestrator integration
It also does not include VMware HA, DRS (Distributed Resource Scheduler), or vSAN at the vCenter layer — those depend on separately licensed vSphere and vSAN editions assigned to hosts.
Licence and Activation
Keys sold on the grey market and via third-party resellers are typically perpetual licence keys — a one-time purchase that unlocks the software without a recurring subscription. However, buyers should be aware of a significant context: Broadcom has eliminated new perpetual licensing from its official channel and moved to annual subscriptions. Perpetual keys available for resale are therefore legacy stock. Check with the seller whether ongoing support and updates are included, as Broadcom ties software updates to active Support and Subscription (SnS) contracts.
Activation is done entirely within the vSphere Client after the vCenter Server Appliance (VCSA) is deployed. Navigate to Administration → Licensing → Licenses, add your key, then assign it to the vCenter Server system under the Assets tab. There is no separate installer to run; the key unlocks the already-running appliance. Delivery by resellers is digital — you receive the key by email and download the VCSA ISO from Broadcom's portal using a linked account.
Note that this is not consumer software. You must already have an ESXi environment (or be building one) to use vCenter Server meaningfully.
Is It Worth It?
For a small business or home lab running two or three ESXi hosts, Foundation covers the most common management tasks competently. If you only need basic VM provisioning, host monitoring, and a single-pane inventory view, paying a premium for Standard is hard to justify.
The honest caution: Broadcom's ownership of VMware has reshaped the licensing landscape significantly. Official perpetual licences are no longer sold new, and the long-term support status of legacy Foundation keys is less clear than it was pre-acquisition. For organisations with growth plans — even modest ones — Standard's unlimited-host scope may be worth the higher outlay to avoid a licence migration later.
Foundation is not suitable for environments expecting to grow beyond three ESXi hosts, requiring HA or DRS at the management layer, or needing linked vCenter instances across sites. For those scenarios, Standard or a broader VMware Cloud Foundation bundle is the appropriate starting point.

Preguntas frecuentes
Todo Utilities & PDF tools →Is a paid PDF editor worth it over free tools?
Free readers view PDFs; paid editors (Nitro, Foxit) add proper editing, OCR, form-filling, redaction and batch conversion. Worth it if you edit PDFs regularly rather than just read them.
Are these utility licences one-time or subscription?
Most are one-time perpetual licences for the version shown; a few (some PDF and system tools) are annual. The offer states the term.
Why compare prices on cheap utilities?
Even low-cost utilities are listed at noticeably different prices across stores. Comparing takes seconds and routinely finds the same licence for less.
