Sobre VMware vCenter Server 7 Foundation
What is VMware vCenter Server 7 Foundation?
VMware vCenter Server is the centralised management layer for VMware vSphere virtualisation environments. Made by VMware (now a Broadcom subsidiary), it lets administrators manage ESXi hosts, virtual machines, networking, and storage from a single interface rather than connecting to each host individually.
Version 7 refers to the vSphere 7 generation, released in 2020. The **Foundation** edition is the middle tier of three vCenter Server licence grades: Essentials (entry-level, bundled with vSphere Essentials kits), Foundation, and Standard (full-featured). Foundation is sold as a standalone per-instance licence, separate from vSphere host licences.
This is an older, now-discontinued perpetual licence. VMware ended new sales of perpetual licences in February 2024; all new VMware purchases are subscription-based. Keys circulating on the third-party marketplace are typically existing perpetual entitlements being resold.
What's Included
Foundation unlocks vCenter Server management for **up to four ESXi hosts**. Within that scope it enables the core vSphere management capabilities:
- Centralised VM lifecycle management (deploy, clone, snapshot, migrate)
- vMotion — live migration of running VMs between hosts with no downtime
- High Availability (HA) to restart VMs automatically if a host fails
- Native file-based backup and restore for vCenter itself
**Important note on advanced features:** Capabilities such as Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS) and Fault Tolerance depend on the licence tier of the **ESXi host** licences (vSphere Enterprise Plus), not on the vCenter edition alone. vCenter Foundation does not independently grant these features; they require appropriately licensed hosts.
**What Foundation does not include** compared to the Standard edition: Enhanced Linked Mode (managing multiple vCenter instances from one pane), vCenter Server High Availability (protecting vCenter itself, not just VMs), and vRealize Orchestrator for workflow automation. If your environment is or will grow beyond four hosts, only Standard supports unlimited host management.
Licence and Activation
vCenter Server Foundation is a **perpetual licence** — you pay once and the software continues to function indefinitely. The Support and Subscription (SnS) contract is a separate entitlement; expiry of SnS stops you receiving updates and support, but does not deactivate the installed software.
Activation uses a **25-character alphanumeric licence key** entered inside the vCenter Server Appliance administration UI after installation. You must download the vCenter Server Appliance (VCSA) installer separately from the VMware/Broadcom Customer Connect portal — the key does not include installer media. One key activates one vCenter instance.
On the third-party marketplace, fulfilment is digital: the key is delivered by email after purchase, typically within minutes to a few hours. There is no physical media.
Is It Worth It?
For a small IT team running a modest VMware environment — say, a branch office, a lab, or a business with three or four physical servers — Foundation gives you centralised control and live migration capability without paying for Standard-edition features you are unlikely to need.
The honest caveats are significant, though. **vSphere 7 is now a legacy platform.** Broadcom's current generation is vSphere 8, and VMware has ended perpetual licence sales entirely. Buying a v7 Foundation key today means you are locking into an older platform with no straightforward upgrade path to the new subscription model without additional cost. If your environment is growing or you anticipate migrating to vSphere 8, factor in the transition cost.
On the reseller market, always verify that the seller can demonstrate the legitimacy of the licence transfer. VMware licence entitlements are tied to the original purchaser's Customer Connect account, and transferring them requires VMware's involvement. A key that works technically is not automatically a key you have legal right to use commercially.

Preguntas frecuentes
Todo Utilities & PDF tools →Is a paid PDF editor worth it over free tools?
Free readers view PDFs; paid editors (Nitro, Foxit) add proper editing, OCR, form-filling, redaction and batch conversion. Worth it if you edit PDFs regularly rather than just read them.
Are these utility licences one-time or subscription?
Most are one-time perpetual licences for the version shown; a few (some PDF and system tools) are annual. The offer states the term.
Why compare prices on cheap utilities?
Even low-cost utilities are listed at noticeably different prices across stores. Comparing takes seconds and routinely finds the same licence for less.
