What is Microsoft Project Standard 2019?

Microsoft Project Standard 2019 is a desktop project management application developed and published by Microsoft. It is part of the Office 2019 generation of perpetual-licence software, meaning you pay once and own the right to use that version indefinitely — there is no recurring subscription fee. It runs on Windows PC only and is designed for individual project managers who need structured scheduling, task tracking, and resource planning tools in a single-user environment.

This is the Standard tier of the 2019 release. Microsoft also sold a Professional edition and cloud-based Microsoft 365 Project plans at the time; Standard sits below Professional in feature depth.

What's included

Project Standard 2019 covers the core workflow of traditional project management:

• **Gantt chart views** for visualising task sequences, durations, and dependencies
• **Task and milestone scheduling** with predecessor links, constraints, and deadlines
• **Resource management** — assign people or equipment to tasks and track workload at a basic level, including single-project resource levelling
• **Project tracking** — compare planned vs. actual progress using baselines
• **Reporting** — built-in graphical reports (burndown, resource overview, cost overview) for stakeholder communication
• **Timeline view** — a simplified visual summary suitable for presentations

What Standard 2019 does *not* include compared to Project Professional 2019: no Team Planner view, no cross-project resource levelling or portfolio-level resource management, no connection to Project Online or Project Server, and no collaboration features. If you need to coordinate across a portfolio or sync with a cloud PM service, Standard 2019 is not the right edition.

The 2019 version does not receive new features after release; Microsoft's development focus has shifted to the subscription-based Microsoft 365 Project plans.

Licence & activation

Project Standard 2019 is sold as a **product key** delivered digitally by email after purchase. You enter the key through Microsoft's activation servers or the Office.com portal, which ties the licence to your Microsoft account. Once registered to an account, the licence can be re-downloaded if you reinstall Windows, provided you sign in with the same Microsoft account.

Keys sold on the grey/secondary market are commonly **OEM keys**. These are genuine Microsoft keys but were originally licensed for system builders, not retail resale. OEM licences are technically bound to the first machine they activate on and are not transferable to a different PC, unlike a full retail licence. Retail keys cost more but offer portability between machines. The product page on this site will indicate the licence type where the seller has disclosed it — check that detail before buying.

Activation requires an internet connection. Linking the licence to a Microsoft account is strongly recommended, as it enables re-download if you reinstall Windows; without that link, you would need to re-enter the product key manually. There is no physical media.

Is it worth it?

Project Standard 2019 makes sense for a project manager who works alone, handles a handful of projects at a time, and does not need cloud sync or team collaboration. If your workflow is a Gantt chart in a shared drive and occasional PDF reports to a client, Standard covers that well.

It is an older release by 2026 standards and Microsoft no longer adds features to it. Users who want the latest improvements, mobile access, or integration with Teams and SharePoint will be better served by a Microsoft 365 Project subscription.

The perpetual model has genuine value for budget-conscious buyers or organisations that must avoid ongoing subscription costs — you pay once and the software continues to function. Just be clear on whether the key you are buying is OEM or retail, as that distinction affects whether you can move the licence to a new machine later.
