What is Microsoft Office 2016 Professional Plus?

Microsoft Office 2016 Professional Plus is a perpetual-licence release of Microsoft's core productivity suite, published by Microsoft Corporation. Released in September 2015 — both to volume-licence customers and to general availability simultaneously — it is a one-time-purchase product: you pay once and own the right to use that version indefinitely, with no recurring subscription fee. It sits above the consumer "Home & Business" and "Home & Student" tiers and is designed for corporate, government, and professional environments that require the full application bundle.

Because it is a fixed version, it does not receive new features after launch — only security patches and bug fixes, which Microsoft committed to providing until October 2025 (mainstream support ended in October 2020). As of mid-2026 it is therefore outside both mainstream and extended support, which is an important consideration before buying.

Professional Plus is the most complete edition of Office 2016 and adds applications not present in lower tiers:

Licence & activation

The honest caveats: mainstream support ended in October 2020 and extended security support ended October 2025, meaning no further security patches are being issued. For internet-connected machines processing sensitive documents, that is a meaningful risk. Users in that situation are better served by Office 2019, Office 2021, or a Microsoft 365 subscription.

If you work largely offline, do not need the latest features, and are comfortable with the end-of-support status, Office 2016 Professional Plus remains a functional and stable choice — particularly at the price points available on key-resale marketplaces versus a new retail box.
