What is Microsoft Office 2013 Professional Plus?

Microsoft Office 2013 Professional Plus is a volume-licensing edition of Microsoft's 2013 Office suite, developed and published by Microsoft. It was released in early 2013 and targets business environments rather than individual consumers. "Professional Plus" sits at the top of the 2013 Office product stack — above the consumer-facing Professional edition — and was originally distributed through Microsoft's Volume Licensing (VL) channels.

Microsoft ended mainstream support for Office 2013 in April 2018, and extended support ended in April 2023. The software still functions on compatible Windows versions, but it no longer receives security patches, which is an important consideration.

What's included

Professional Plus bundles the core Office desktop applications along with several tools not found in lower tiers:

Licence and activation

Keys sold on grey-market and third-party key platforms are almost always **volume-licence (MAK or KMS) keys** extracted from VL batches. These are not the same as a retail box key.

• **Activation:** You install the Office 2013 installer (available from Microsoft's servers with a valid key) and enter the product key during or after setup. Activation is handled by Microsoft's servers or, in some VL deployments, an internal KMS server.
• **Transferability:** Volume-licence keys are technically licensed for organisational use. A retail key is transferable to a new machine if removed from the old one; VL/MAK keys operate under different terms. Is it worth it?

Office 2013 is now over a decade old and out of support, meaning no further security updates will be issued. For anyone handling sensitive documents or connecting Outlook to live email services, running unsupported software carries a genuine security risk.

That said, it remains a reasonable choice in specific situations:

• Users who need a **one-time purchase** with no recurring subscription cost and whose workflow does not depend on cloud features or co-authoring
• Organisations running **isolated or air-gapped machines** where the lack of patches is an acceptable, managed risk
• Users on older Windows hardware that cannot comfortably run Office 2019 or 2021

If you need active security support, modern co-authoring, or OneDrive integration, Microsoft 365 (subscription) or a newer perpetual edition such as Office 2021 is the more defensible choice. Office 2013 Professional Plus suits buyers who understand its age, accept the support trade-off, and simply need a stable, full-featured desktop suite at a lower price point than current editions.
